Ok, when i try converting my .avi file(maybe a divx file) it goes off sync with the video, so i tried using vdub to extract the audio, but vdub won't let me do it, it says: the requested audio compression is not compatible with the input format. Check that the sampling rate and channel count match those of the requested format.
ok, what does that mean? what do i do?

At a guess I would say the Divx contains either VBR MP3 audio or AC3 audio streams. In vdub, use audio-direct stream copy, file-save as wav and then use either BeSweet or HeadAch3e to convert to stereo wav. Search the forums or HowTo's for more info.
