  1. Hi everyone,

I've obtained some SVCD images as BIN/CUE files, and I've burned them out to CDs by using CDRDAO on my Mac and also by using Nero on my PC. However, my Panasonic DVD player can't play SVCDs so there's no way to verify them. (I remux the header to play them, but would like to keep the original SVCDs for the future..)

So what I tried to do was to use the Unix "cmp" command to compare the AVSEQ01 file on the CD with the AVSEQ01 file inside the BIN. The problem is that every time I try to access the SVCD, the Finder gives an error and says it can't read the file. I don't have the exact error in front of me, but I think it's something about a bad data fork.

Now, my PC seems to be able to access this file off the SVCD, so I'm wondering if OS X just doesn't support that file system. Can anyone comment on this?

Also, as a sub-question, when I examine the AVSEQ01 file on the SVCD and compare it to the .MPG file that I extracted from the BIN (using GNU vcdtoolsX), they're different lengths. Is this normal? Does burning the MPG file change its length?

    Thanks for your help!

I'm not a MAC person so this is just a comment on the (S)VCD filesystem.

Those are not real files and that's why you might be having trouble. A standard ISO9660 ( cd-rom fs ) has a TOC and then lots of files. With VCD's and SVCD's those .mpg ( or .dat ) files refrence sectors that reside in a totally diffrent track on the CD. This might be why you are having troubles.

  3. Thank you. That sounds reasonable, but then how can you verify if an SVCD was actually written out 100% perfectly? Is the only way to play it on a stand-alone player and watch for glitches? I'm not sure how much I trust CDRDAO or Nero (no verify feature).

Maybe I'll have to buy a second (cheap) DVD player just for SVCDs. Heh.

apex 1500 has been listed on dealnews.comfor $50 it will play anything!

On you question about size, yes most .mpg files will require some padding, but it should be minimal.
