Hi - I have a Pioneer DV626, and as it doesnt play *proper* SVCDs i tried the VCD Header Trick. I tried it on the first CD of the SW:AOTC DVD Rip (ntsc svcd - 480x480, 29.97fps), and it plays fine, except for the fact that it is squashed up into the left side of the screen. Has anyone else experienced this problem who can suggest a way of trying to fix it? I know there must be a way as other people with my dvd player says the trick works.
Thank you

Hi!
I´m having exactly the same problem with the dv-626!
The Header-Trick worked perfect, but when playing the video is squeezed to the left side of the screen....
Could this problem be related to a warning from TMPEGEnc that said "XXX packets caused buffer underrun...", when applying the Header-Trick.
(The header-trick worked fine on other mpeg2 files, and there was no problem with the playback....)
Any Help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi - finally someone has the same problem! Anyway i think i got that error also when applying the trick, so it may be that.
Which files did yours work on? I havent found any yet, so now i have resorted to just hooking my comp up to my tele and playin the files that way.

My old Mpeg card use to do that with resolutions it didn't support fully. 480*480 to be exact.
It sounds like the Player is trying to play it at the wrong resolutin. (480*480 @ 720*480 ) and the horizontal being half is getting squished to one side. You'd get the same effect if you could make your monitor stay at 1024*768 and dropped the video card to 640*480... -
I'd say just change the res to 352x480. (This'll make a CVD with a VCD header). Your player should recognize and display it properly.
If high resolution is really important you can also try 704x480, but I don't guarantee any results. -
Back when TmpgEnc 12c came out I remember there was a problem with SVCD encodes that caused display problems on certain players similar to what you are describing. I think some Pioneer models were among the players with the problem. It was related to the SDE headers in the MPEG2 file not having the correct display size information or something like that. There was a "12c patch" utility that could correct MPEG2 files with the proper SDE info so that they would display correctly. This link has some info about it http://www.geocities.com/eby_vdo/
Possibly the "VCD header trick" that you are doing to your SVCD files is causing similar problems with the SDE header info and that is causing your display problems. I would suggest first try muxing the SVCD file as both "VCD 2.0 non-standard" and "VCD 2.0 standard" to see if that makes any difference. If not then I would try the 12c patch on your files. If it still doesn't work then possibly try re-encoding your SVCD files at 352x480 MPEG2 instead of 480x480 and then remux with the VCD header trick.
