  1. okay,
i have a 640mb video in .dat format, i used vcdgear and converted it to mpeg, a few errors in the video so i used a mpeg corrector program, then the video plays fine, now i can't convert it to divx i tried using virtual dub to encode it to divx....it didn't work, then i tried to re-encode the video with TMPEnc...didn't work it couldn't even open the video without crashing, soo i thought i do it the hard way and try using graphedit.......still didn't work can someone please help me out.

if it helps here is the error messages i keep getting:
-Virtual Dub "MPEG Import Filter: packet sync error on packet stream (10bccda)"

-TMPEnc " "file c:\resident evil.mpeg" cannot open, or unsupported." "

-Graphedit "Cannot construct a graph from this file."

a .dat file is mpeg already -- it is a vcd .... so the question is why bother to convert a vcd to divx when the file size will not be any smaller and the quality will be worse ... why not just keep it as a vcd file (mpeg1) and save your self a lot of trouble...

    xerces,
In the process of converting that .dat file did you by chance convert it to an mpeg-2 file? The only time I've even seen the error "MPEG Import Filter: packet sync error on packet stream” in VirtualDub is when I tried to import an mpeg-2 file. The same goes for TMPEGnc if you don't have an mpeg-2 codec onboard. As a test try opening that file up in DVD2AVI if you have it, and hit preview. If it starts playback it's an mpeg-2 file.

  4. i tried playing the video in dvd2avi and it didn't play, and the reason why i want to convert to divx is because it's a 640mb file i have no cd burner or dvd player i just wanted to watch a movie i haven't seen before and transfer it to a friend of mine who also has a 56k modem so instead of him downloading the video for 6-7 days it'll only should take him a day after i convert it into a reasonably good quality format.

    to kayfam,
if the video is a mpeg-2 video is there any sofware/filters to convert it into mpeg-1/avi???

the "dat" file is already mpeg1 and converting it to divx will not make it much smaller ..

you can easly play the dat file on a pc -- sometime all you need to do is open it with media player or QT or rename it to xxx.mpg and open it ..
