  1. What is the best way to convert asf files to avi?I have tried using TMPGENC 2.53 with nimo codec, Vdub 1.4.10, graphedit and asftools, but have had not much success.I think graphedit is the best, but it uses up way too much disk space. Is there a way to keep the output file to a minimum size? After trying ASFTOOLS, the video came out ok, but there was no sound.Am I doing something wrong?
any help would be much appreciated.
    thanks

The 1.3 versions of Virtualdub had the capability to reencode asf files.

www.doom9.net had a copy on their download list last time I looked.

  4. I have the same problem as you do with converting ASF to AVI, except that I have VDub 3.1, and it still isn't working. I get an error message " could not locate decompressor for format WMV1 . I have tried ASF tools, TEMPGEnc, Graphedit, and Rad Video Converter, but nothing works! This is very frustrating. I even tried re-making my video in "MovieXone" to avoid the whole WMV-ASF hassle, but that hasn't worked either. Sorry for ranting on, but this is very irritating!
(There is a tutorial on this site for using VDub 1.3 to convert)
I hope you have better luck than me.

I'm having the same problem....I just figured out how to put my logo throughout an entire video clip, for posting them on my website. I will have to rerecord all my clips so they are in AVI format.

I checked the website listed above, and they have the current Virtual Dub, is there any other place to get v1.3?? Or is it possible for someone to send it to me?

I'd rather not have to rerecord all these clips, I have like 90+ - would it down grade the quality of the clip if I covert if from ASF to AVI an then back to ASF after the logo is in there? If so then I'd rather just rerecord them, as they are pretty bad quality on the tapes that I'm getting them from.

    Any help would be great!

  6. You can get it from http://perso.wanadoo.fr/nomad/virtualdub13c.zip
If you get it working maybe you could let me know what you did.

    Good luck

Thanks so much for the program it works well!

I could be wrong but your problem sounds like a codec problem. I thought WMV was Windows Media. Maybe you should reinstall Windows Media codecs? I'm not sure where to do this, or even if this is what's wrong. But I had no problem at all with converting the ASF to AVI

Ewww I take that back, when I save it as an AVI it just shows as being a file....not any certain type like an AVI it just says File

Update: I had to right click on it, and choose properties, and put .avi after the title, now it will open.....

So you can't even create the file?

  9. Glad it worked for you!
And yes, I can create the file, I just can't burn it. (Which was basically the whole reason that I wanted to convert it in the first place) I have read so many error messages trying to burn it, that I bet I have seem them all! I get a "no fixation" error with Nero, so I am trying VCDEasy
... I have tried just about everything .... *sigh* oh well, it will work eventually, or it won't work. I'll just keep trying.
    Have fun.
