  1. Although I am somewhat of a "newbie," with the help of this board I have been able to successfully make copies of my DVDs. However, I just hit my first "snag" if you will and can't figure it out.

    Smart Ripper Problem:

I currently have Smart Ripper v2.36 and have successfully ripped .VOB files until now. The DVD that I am trying to rip is a fitness workout DVD that I purchased (note: all of the other successful rips I have made in the past were movie DVDs, but I would think that wouldn't matter). Although I don't understand all of the terminology, the problem has something to do with the "Key-Check" function. If I select it to "don't encrypt," (which is pretty much against every guide I have seen on this board) it seems like Smart Ripper is doing it's job. However, when I go to view the .VOB file, the picture and sound are all garbled. If select one of the other settings (i.e. "once" or "every vob-file") Smart Ripper seems to get stuck on the "Key Check" part of the ripping seqence and ultimately doesn't rip the .VOB files. I can't figure out what makes this DVD (a workout DVD so different from the other DVDs I have ripped using Smart Ripper.

    DVD2SVCD Problem:

Since Smart Ripper didn't work I tried to use DVD2SVCD. It worked, but only partially. The first issue was when you start the process (hitting the little CD-ROM icon so that DVD2SVCD reads the source DVD) the "Analyzing DVD" window stays on for a LONG time. For DVDs in the past it was only open for a split second. Now it does eventually get past this and allows me to continue. I put in all of the settings for a standard SVCD. However, each workout on the DVD is a different set of .VOB files, but it won't rip all of them, it only rips one workout. I can't figure out how to tell it to rip all of the individual workout segments.

Sorry for the long post but I couldn't figure this stuff out and didn't really find anything in the archives that could help me. Thanks in advance!!!

  2. Have you tried to play the movie first for a few minutes before using Smart Ripper or DVD2SVCD? This will usually unlock the DvD and allow proper ripping to occur.

If your using DVD2SVCD, make sure to hit the load settings button and load the SVCD ini file. This will reload the default settings. I've never had a problem running this great program. The only adjustments I make are on the bitrate tabs. I change my cd size to 800.

  3. I think I know what you are talking about. I actually had to do that for a few movies. But then I got a patch for Smart Ripper so that I don't have to unlock a movie by playing it with a DVD player first. When I open Smart Ripper it sees and unlocks the VOB files just fine (at least it appears to be fine, it does the same thing with this DVD that it did with the others that worked). But then I am far from a pro at this so maybe there is something I am missing.

My only problem with DVD2SVCD is that it only sees/rips part of the DVD. In the block that says "Movie Length" it only has the time for part of the DVD and not the whole DVD. The only way I can make it rip/encode another part of the DVD is to use the pull down menu and pick a different length time segment that corresponds to a different part of the DVD. Maybe that is the only way I can rip/convert this DVD with DVD2SVCD but if I could rip the individual .VOB files with Smart Ripper, this would not be an issue.

  4. Two things that should make it work.

    1) Get the latest Version of SmartRipper (v2.41) http://www.riphelp.com/downloads/smart-ripper.html

    2) Install an ASPI Layer http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/frcaspi.cfm

  5. smartripper has been known to not work with dvd2svcd. use dvd2svcd's internal routines and report back.

  6. Thanks for the responses!! I ended up downloading the updated version of Smart Ripper and that solved the "Key Code" issue. I can now rip all of the VOB files on the DVD and use TEMPG to edit them as I need.
