  1. I burned a VCD formatted piece and played it without a problem. BUT, when I tried to burn a SVCD (converted with TMPEG), NERO (5.5) mentioned something about my MPEG being "non-standard" or "non-compliant." I burned it anyway and well... coaster. Any ideas?

  2. If Nero said it's not compliant... it's probably not compliant. The Apex does alright, so long as you don't mess with the default resolutions (480x480 for SVCD, 352x240 for VCD).

If your resolution is 480x480... then something else may be suspect. What bitrate did you use? CBR or VBR? Or CQ? Since Nero mentioned a problem, I would suspect your encode settings.

If Nero had burned without complaining and you still ended up with a coaster, I might just blame the odds, say it was a bad burn/CD, and for you to give it another try without changing anything.

  3. I made a lot of svcd's with nero and played them on my 1100W with no problem. Yesterday I made one and it did not work. I'm pretty sure the difference was the menu. With Menu they play, without menu they just sit there. Let me know if I am right about this.

    Good Luck

  4. Also, I've heard cases where 1100Ws won't play media they're supposed to (in this case, SVCD) and it turned out the player was defective. Do you have any way of testing the CD you made on another player? Like your PC or another DVD player?

I'm glad to see someone with similar setup. The dvd player loaded the cd (and VCD/CD light up) but wh I hit play, it just sat there. Menus huh? I'll have to figure out how to get them in there.

I could try it on a friends. I'm new to this, so when I coverted with TMPG, I just used all the default settings that are in the "newbie guides." I didn't mess with bit rates or anything. I just selected NTSC -> SVCD.

  7. I've got an 1100W also. I've done default settings in TMPGEnc and the SVCDs played fine. You mentioned the lights on the player. It may have been a throw-away comment, but I have a SVCD light on mine, not a VCD/CD light.

You may want to try authoring with VCDEasy, and then burning the CUE file with Nero. This is how I produce ALL my VCDs/SVCDs now. Works everytime.

  8. The menus in Nero are simple to set up but I have not had success with thumbnails. Just keep it simple. If you want to have chapters, use tmpgenc to cut up your file into smaller files. After Nero burns the CD and you put it in your player the menu should pop up. Hit 1 or next on your remote to start. It will play all the way through but will pause slightly at each "chapter point". Hit the stop button to go to main menu.

This method makes much better quality videos that burning with Pinnacle Studio 8 and you will find that fast forward will work (unlike when you burn the CD with Studio 8)

At least that's how it works for me on my Apex 1100W.
