A friend resently bought a DVD player but he still has old videos. Is there a way to convert them to cd's using my computer so that he can watch them?
Thanx in Advance.

Now that THAT'S out of my system, first you need to determine if your DVD player will play VCD, and if so, will it play CDR or CDRW?
The "DVD Players" section is helpful in this regard.
Once you've got some idea of what your player can handle, you need to brush up on the capturing, encoding, and burning steps and techniques. Getting video onto a CD and having it play is actually pretty easy. The real work is in getting the QUALITY you want. -

I appreciate the quick response guys, Thanx.
Another question - What connections do I need to make in order to play and record the tape? Is it just the S-Video connection between the TV and the graphics card? -
When I click on some of the links I can not read them. They are a load of squares, numbers and signs. Any suggestions why?

Squares and signs? It sounds like your browser/OS may not have the right files to read English, perhaps?
Also, S-VIDEO is probably the recommended method for video if you can't rip from the source directly (like a DVD or something). I've transferred all my VHS stuff to VCD via S-VIDEO, so I can tell you that it looks pretty decent. Remember though: if your source is poor quality, which is usually the case with VHS, putting it on CD won't make it look any better. -
Will he need a video capture card as well?

Thanx for your reply ranma_st
I'm afraid i'm a novice at this......so go easy on me!.........please? -
ok, so what we are saying is as follows:
An S-Video connection between Capture card and Video player.
An Audio connection between Capture card and Video player.
And a connection between Capture card and computer.
Right? -
Don't be afraid!
I am a newbie too. However, after too much reading in the How To guides and forum posts I began to learn a little.
So read and be patient. There are a lot of wisemen here who can help you if you are persistent and read a little more.
If you friend's PC does not have a capture card, you will need one to capture video from VHS, DVD, DV, TV etc. If capturing from VHS you will have to connect directly to the VHS (or whatever the video source is) not from the TV.
Your friend's PC has an S-Video connector. Is this connectro input or output? If output you can not capture anything from there.
It is very possible that when you have the video capture card you will know how to connect the computer to the video source. Then you may read more of the guides from vcdhelp.com

Right?
If your Video Player has S-video connector you can use it. If not, you can use compose video.
Audio should be two compose cables (LEFT/RIGHT) or digital if allowed.
Connection between Capture card and computer should be internal. Maybe you can change your actual video card and use a Video Capture Card like the ATI AIW (All-In-Wonder).

Rey.....I always knew there was a god!
His video card (Voodoo3 3000) has output, but not input, so he will need a capture card before he can do anything.
Thanx for your time, advice and input.
