I just uninstalled my OS (win2000) and reinstalled it, along with everything! MMC, all my authoring stuff, etc.

Now, when I capture some mpeg2, it reflects the proper file size as though I captured MPEG video, and the file type says "movie file" and it is associated with windows media player, but when I play the file, it is only audio, no video.

The video screen itself doesn't even appear (as opposed to the screen being there but black) what is up?

I thought it might be a codec thing, but I have installed MMC most recent version, NEMO, and Adobe Premiere.

    Help...

You might want to try opening the mpg in some program like DVD2AVI to see if the video is really not there, or the playback of it's just really screwed up somehow. Since DVD2AVI has it's OWN internal mpeg-2 decoder it can't be screwed up by anything in your system.

terrific advice! OKAY, I did it and the video IS THERE, and I tried a video file from the past that I know for a fact is valis (an .avi, not an MPEG2) and it worked fine in WMP.

So this appears to be a prob with playing mpeg2 files? any more diagnoses?

    thanks!

    here's another thing:

my TMPGEnc will not open the mpeg2 files (as the source) anymore! this used to work. it is the same copy of tmpgenc... Anyone?

    Andy

PS - IT WILL open MPEG1 files... as will WMP. Just MPEG2 is the problem.

When you installed MMC did you also install the DVD player or for that matter any other DVD software such as Cyberlink's Power DVD? If not MPEG-2 clips won't play since windows doesn't offer any native support. Also too, in the latest version of MMC (7.7.0.1 as of this post) you need to install the DVD player software first, reboot and then install the rest of MMC or the DVD player won't function properly and hence no MPEG-2 support.

  6. This probably goes along with kayfam's post: Make sure you have the required codecs. After re-formatting and re-installing, you may have neglected to download the codecs you need to play certain files.

you are all geniuses! yes, now they playback with video! THANKYOU!

One more problem, is that the TMPGEnc still won't accept the MPEG2 files. what have I done? What do I do?

    Thanks all,

    Andy

Sounds like you are still missing the RIGHT mpeg-2 codec ( isn't this fun ). Try to remeber the last DVD player you installed in your previous setup and try re-installing that one.
