    What's the difference between general purpose DVD-R and a authoring DVD-R??? Are there things I can record on one that I can't record (like make homemade DVD videos, DVD movie/game copies, data, etc.) on the other???

    Authoring are for pro use and can be used as a master to be sent to a replication plant. Dont let it bother you, you only need to get General ones to back up data, make DVD video copies etc.
