how do i hookup my vcr to my computer? i have a video tape i want to make into a movie file... please let me know what i need to do this or direct me to a tutorial... i searched all over and couldent find

Not to over simplify but....,
Audio/Video OUT from VCR to Audio/Video IN capture card. -
That's all I need? I suppose capture cards come with software... Does this usually work well or are there many compatability problems?

There are capture cards/kits from inexpensive to off the wall, your budget makes that decision. For only vhs to cd/dvd, the low end will work as vhs is only so good to start with.
As far as the "How to" part of your question, this board has all the answers.
Start with the newbie section and work your way through, ask questions for what you don't understand, and before you know it, you'll have those vhs tapes on either cd (vcd, svcd, xsvcd) or dvd.
This board has been one the most helpful compture related resources I have encountered in my many years of playing with this stuff.
