I've looked all over the net. I know about all the various options of capturing to Huffyuv, mjpeg, dixv, etc & then converting that captured video to .mpg using TMPGEnc.... But I'd rather skip the conversion step entirely & instead.. When I capture have the final result saved to disc.
What I want to know is, does a Codec exist that instead of choosing huffyuv to capture to.. I can instead capture DIRECTLY to an .mpg file that is SVCD compliant? So I can capture it & then burn it directly to SVCD disc.
If not a codec what about a piece of capture software.. That in real time captures the stream & does the SVCD compliant mpeg-2 conversion before it saves the file to the HD.
Please if anything exists links & info are appreciated. Thanks!
PS: I am not looking for a piece of hardware. I am looking for a software mpeg-2 real time encoding solution?

Simply click on the "Tools" link under the "Other" category on this site. Depending on your capture hardware, at least 3 packages would work for you.
And I might add: These softwares do create MOSTLY compliant SVCD files. You will likely have to tweak slightly with some (such as PowerVCR II) in the registry to get it just right.

Thanks for the quick reply! I've tried some of the tools & I am wondering if anyone knows what's gone wrong:
With PowerVCR the video image is jerky & poor quality. Not even while capturing, even while just viewing the video stream. It's pulling the stream from a WDM input. Every 3-10 seconds the video will hang for a second & bounce up/down.. When I go to capture (no matter what format) it gets so bad that it's not watchable at all. BTW this doesn't happen with other programs such as AVI_IO & Virtual Dub (Which I use for most capturing).
NanoDVR - First run it crashed my box. On reboot I tried again & got some error message on trying to record such as can't initialize preview graph or something along those lines. It was able to view video OK.. But record button came back with nothing but a black screen. I have no idea why it can 'view' the video but not record it? Again AVI_IO & Virtual Dub work flawlessly in both viewing & recording.
WinVCR - I can't find a trial version of this that will let me test it's SVCD Mpeg-2 capture on my machine? Is there one available?
Thanks again!
PS: So I assume there is no codec like huffyuv that I can use in a program like avi_io to capture direct SVCD compliant mpeg-2 video? -
Please take some time to fill in the information on your profile of your computer specs and capture hardware, makes things a lot easier and quicker to diagnose.
Also, most of the codecs on a system are for compressing AVI or Windows media. There are also custom codecs used my ATI software and other "instant replay" types of configurations. Mpeg-4 is available, however it still lives within an AVI file. Capture proggies with MPEG are your only choice...
