What's up guys...I've been deciding whether or not to buy a DVD burner, but i most likely will in a week or so.
Anyways, i figured i would go and buy a couple of blank DVD-R and RW disks in the meantime.(just to get a head start)
I couldn't believe my eyes, when i walked into COMPUSA, and the price of these disks are outrageous!!The brands they had were: Imation,Memorex, and COMPUSA(didn't have a price) Either way though, i was going to buy the Memorex, because i heard of its good compatibility with set top DVD players. Anyways, they were charging $7.89 for Memorex DVD-R's and $9.99 for RW's.
Please, someone tell me that there are cheaper but still reliable brands out there? Otherwise, this whole DVD burner thing could end up being really really expensive in the long run.![]()
P.S. I would also like some advice on where to buy the Pioneer AO4 online? Im thinking about Pricegrabber.com cause they seem to be selling it for the cheapest price. But i also want a good delivery, like i dont want to get the burner 2 weeks after i order it. LOL Thanx![]()

Go to www.qtccdr.com to get dvd-r's. I find the 1x princo to fit me just fine and their only 1 dollar a disk. You can also get pioneer disks for 5 dollars in a five pack.

Try mailorder. I don't have a DVD burner, but a friend of mine says he gets blanks for $1-$2 each when he buys in bulk (100) mailorder. Check www.pricewatch.com .

I used yahoo shopping to find it, and I bought the 104, NOT the A04 (same drive, less software included, no pretty cardboard box)
I ended up getting it from a place called Jazz Technologies, I think (I know it was Jazz something) and I paid barely over $200 for it. It came with one 2x pioneer dvd-r.

I also purchased some K-Hypermedia DVD-R's from MicroCenter and they played on all the above mentioned formats also. They were $4.99 each when I bought them. 1X Write.
I've also had good luck with Memorex DVD-R's and RW's but avoid them because of the cost. Apple media works great also.
The only bulk mail order brand I have ordered was the DVD-R Pro's from Meritline and they sucked big time. Seemed like anything that went out past the 2.5GB mark or so would have tons of MPEG artifcats during playback on the Pioneer 343. -
The DVDpro DVD-Rs from Meritline work amazingly well for me and they only cost $1.09 each. The guy above must have got a bad batch or something because the discs I got play in EVERYTHING perfectly!

well this is a frequent subject and i must say i went through the same thing, i have a pioneer 104. i do alot of burnind for selling so i only use memorex and ive never had a compatability issue never! i buy cheaper meritline for personal use but i have stopped because 1 in 10 screws up for me freezing. errors etc.
i get my memorex at buy.com for under 4 bux a piece although the price fluctuates but its usually around 4 bux.if you find a cheapy that works good then you can use it for personal use, i have given up trying because memorex works all the time for me. order online!! when you find a sale stock up! -
At my local Fry's the price range for japanese dvd-r was $5- $25 each, I think I'll find a online dealer of Maxell disk.

If you want to buy locally, and want something easy to find and reliable, I'd suggest going to your local Apple store and buying a 5-pack of Apple branded media for US$25. 2X certified and excellent quality.
$5 a disc isn't the cheapest you can find stuff locally, but it's better than trudging to a local electronics shop only to find $8 Mitsui's (good) and $2 Princos (not so good). -
I just ordered some so called "high quality" DVD-Rs from Meritline and hope they works better than their DVD-Pros. I've also ordered a sample pack to test out the others. I'll let you know in a few days once I've tried them all out.

If you are daunted by the cost of recordable media, and you have not yet purchased your DVD burner, you might want to read abit here about SVCD as a format to back-up DVD's onto CD-R's ( around $0.10 ea , on sale for good quality Taiyo ) using DVD2SVCD software. A viable alternative.

If you look around online you can find good dvd-r media for 2.30 -3.50 that burn at 2X. I'm talking TDK and Imation. Mitsui and Pioneer have come down to the 4 dollar range and they are probably the best you can get.
I found tdk discs for 2.30 and ordered 60 at thenerds.net but they sold out and now they are 3.34 each. These are in jewel cases and made in Japan.
Bestbuy has Verbatims for 60.00 for a 15 pack if you can find them in stock.
As far as memorex goes I had to warm them up to get the dvd-r's to burn in my old dvr-103. Otherwise I got a power calibration error in nero. I have only tried the memorex dvd-rw in my dvr-104 and it works fine.
As far as dvd compatibility goes read this:
