  1. Hi All!
In response to the responses that I got for my last post about whether or not you can buy dual layered blank dvd's and indeed just do a straight copy 1:1 and some of you said no. I'd just like to say that I beg to differ.
The computer shop near where I live Got some dual layered discs in and I've since backed-up Lord of the Rings One for One with Nero 5.5.9.0 It took about 45 mins on my LG DVD writer on a PIII 800 Mhz 256 MB SDRAM
    Cheers any way.

  2. 2-sided and dual-layer are not the same thing. You can buy 2-sided recordable DVD blanks, but not dual-layered recordable DVD blanks.

So, it seems that all those people are still right, and you are still wrong.
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

  3. just thought id say that even if you could buy dual layered dvds, dvd writers (commercial ones excluded of course) cannot write to more than 1 layer

There are no dual-layer capable recorders available - commercial, or otherwise. And, they are not likely to be available in the near future, since all development on them has been stopped due to limitations with the current technology . All dual-layered DVD's available today are MANUFACTURED, not burned.

dual layer is what it sounds like:

two super thin dvd-r media, the top one semi-transparent, sandwiched together. When the player reaches the end of the first layer, it starts on the second one. i.e.- two layers

this has nothing to do with dvds that can be flipped over.

Like all before me tried to explain there is no DUAL LAYER DVD blank and based on today technology which is organic dye for DVD-R's and Phase Change for DVD-RW's we will never have such a dual layer blank.

Don't confuse dual side single layer with dual layer discs.

  7. Not to mention there is no dvd burner that will write in the area for the key, which is essential for most commercial movie playback.

  8. Pardon my ignorance. I just got a DVR-104 for my birthday, and I'm new to all this.

My question is, if there are no dual layer dvd-r's, what is this?

(btw, It's just a question, not meant to be confrontational)

9.4GB Pioneer DVD-R blanks? How is the 9.4GB possible?

    Thanks.

On Pioneer's web site, the model number DVSR470WDD50 is described as a double-sided blank DVD, one that contains 4.7gb of data on each side. It seems as if the picture on the Issidata page is misleading, in that it makes it appear as if all 9.4gb is one side of the disc.

  10. It also doesn't say anything about them being double-sided on issi's website. That IS misleading.
    Thanks.

the most misleading thing is that the picture shows printing on the top side of the disc - this cannot be if it is dual-sided.

if you look at the name, DVSR"470"WDD50 , i'm sure the 470 stands for 4.7 gigs as 47 appears on most all pioneer dvd-r(single or double sided). i'm sure most of you tekkies would agree that if pioneer made a dual layered dvd-r, not only would there be a "94" somewhere in the product name but they would also advertise it very directly by explaining in laymen's terms that 9.4 gigs of data would fit on one side. because whatever the reason is( i think it's because dvd-9s are pressed anyway) they know the market for this product would be very strong.

there are no 9.4 GB single-sided DVD-r. Period. Don't listen to anyone saying otherwise.

Dual layered discs are two 4.7 GB layers burned and then GLUED together - 9.4 GB are never BURNED straight.
