  1. Okay, for some reason I cannot get the movie "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" to be in widescreen (4:3) format encoding with TMPG...

All other movies so far I've tried have worked great.
The only thing different with this movie, is when you start it up (the DVD, in a dvd player) it gives you a choice of how you want to view it, widescreen or fullscreen. This is the disc that is giving me the choice, not the player. So how do i get my VCD to be widescreen and not fullscreen?

    I use SmartRipper,DVD2AVI,TMPGEnc.

With TMPG, the source settings are
4:3 525 Line (NTSC, 704x480). For video arrange method, I chose, "fullscreen, keep aspect ratio" (which is what i always choose, and this is the first time it hasn't worked). Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

  2. The disk is probably anamorphic.

For anamorphic disks, you need to tell TMPGEnc the source is 16:9 so that it does the conversion to widescreen.

Have you tried telling the player to view it widescreen when it asks? (NOTE: I'm 99.99% sure it's the player asking, not the disk)

    poopygood,

When using smartripper, you probably ripped the fullscreen (4:3) version and not the widescreen (16:9,2.35:1...) version. Both are probably on the same disc. Hopefully they didn't cut down on the bitrate to fit both versions on a 4.7 disc.

When in smartripper, look for another set of VOBs that have a size equal to a movie, probably at least 2-3 at 1gb, and choose that set. Smartripper probably just goes to the largest one and chooses it by default. You can always change that choice. That is how some people get the extras like trailers, interviews and the like.
    Have a good one,

    neomaine

  4. thanks VidGuy, I'll give that a try, is there any way I can tell by looking that the disc is anamorphic?
My gosford park cover says right on it "anamorphic widescreen"...

"Have you tried telling the player to view it widescreen when it asks?(NOTE: I'm 99.99% sure it's the player asking, not the disk)"

that is what i select when it asks, I haven't yet selected "fullscreen".
How can it be the player that is asking when the screen that shows up with the choice is a picture of the movie with two buttons that are also little pictures of the movie? Kinda hard to explain, but it's not a generic window like I would see with my DVD player...

Either way, I'll try setting TMPG to 16:9 and see what happens, Thanks for your help! [/b]
