I know that by now the AMD vs Intel debate is getting pretty tired, but I have a problem that I need some advice on.... I have a AMD AthlonXP 1900+ with Epox board & 256RAM and my friend has an Intel P4 1.5 with Epox board & 384RAM. I rarely ever play games and primarily use my machine to rip DVDs to make SVCDs. Recently my friend (who only uses his machine to play games) commented on how much quicker certain games were on my computer compared to his own. Anyways to cut a long story short we got to talking about swapping board,CPU,RAM combo. Do you think this is a good idea, will this dramtically decrease my ecoding times or not at all. All comments will be appreciated.

  2. what kind of video card do you both have? That is the major factor between the two for game playing...

  3. If you don't play games and use TMPGEnc for your encoder:
TMPGEnc is optimized for Intel(R)Pentium(R)4 processor

Then you might be better off with the P4 IMHO. If you're a game player, then stay with the AMD.

  4. I'd agree with Executioner on this one assuming that your friends P4 is using DDR RAM or RDRAM, if it's using normal SDRAM you're better off keeping the Athlon.

  5. Look at tomshardware.com and select some cpu review...it will show you some mpeg encoding statistics for a whole bunch of cpu's. I think Intel will win the game, but also depends on ram and hdd speed. Intel P4 with plain pc133 ram is a waste of money..use a HIGH DDR or RDRAM version. The athlon will need high speed ram also.

I personally use a AMD 760 dual athlon board with raid striping config. This will beat any P4 becouse dual cpu is not possible with p4.

You could buy a second athlon XP, modify them to run in MP mode on a new mainboard... not sure if you want to pay the money for it though.

take a good look before exchanging your board..

  6. Well putting the performance discussion aside, an AMD system (I have one) just makes quite a bit more noise than a P4 system because the AMD produces more heat.

My next system will be a P4 becuase of this noise

    cheers

    how does heat=noise?

wouldn't that make my oven really loud?

more heat -> more cooling -> more fans or faster fans -> more noise.

we are both using SDRAM and same vid card too. I think I'll stick with the AMD though, probably not worth the hassle.
