  1. Hello Blackout,

Thank you for such a nice tutorial. I have two questions though.

First, I just copied a DVD. Since it was less than 4.3 GB, I used option 1. Unfortunately, the copy only plays in one of my stand-alone DVD players and in one of my DVD drives (the one that burned the copy). It doesn't play in my other DVD drives and in another stand-alone player. What can be the problem? Does it matter what brand is a blank DVD?

Second, does DVDDecrypter make region free copies?

    Thanks,
    Aul

  2. I know this thread is older and so are some of these posts but I have to ask .. is the AUDIO_TS folder really necessary for comptability even if there is nothing in it ? Maybe that is why my dvd's are not playing in my players i only have a VIDEO_TS ..

Make sure to use DVD-R and not RW, unless you know for certain that your DVD supports RW media (mine doesn't).

    Platoon13r,

Rename the MPV file to M2V. I'm not sure if this is necessary, but that's what the tutorial say to do, so I listen Also, try getting a copy of DVD Maestro. It's powerful and easy to learn. It's very easy to import the chapter points into as well.

  3. I thought you guide was very good, I used the first technique rather easily. I used to use use smart ripper and Nero. The secind techique seems a little tricky. If you could can you brak it down a little more and possibly show some pictures. That wyould help a great deal. I use DVDDecryper fine and get stuck on the next two steps. Thanks alot.

I have read that the DVD standard requires the folder to be there. Some (most?) DVD players might not require it, but why take the chance? It only takes a second to add a blank AUDIO_TS folder.

  5. Ok I think i may have found my problem i didnt use the GETVTS (or whatever) button in ifoedit before i burned .. will try again when i get home ..strange that it played fine in the dvd+r drive tho

  6. I just made a backup of my Royal tennenbaums and the guide worked perfectly. The only problem/difference i'm seeing in the backup i made is that it's a little wider than the origional letterbox view. And it seems like it's a little stretched kinda like choosing fullscreen on a DVD and it just stretches and elongates the picture...

other than that this guide was great... what i'm doing now is trying to combine this with another Tutorial that uses Tpmg and other tools to calculate bitrates to get it to fill the disk perfectly, that way i have maximum disk/bitrate useage.

    What do you guys think?

    Thanks for any replies.

  7. tmpgenc is great if you have the time for it .. others knock it but in every side by side test i've done the quality was better .. the problem is it is slooooooooow .. a single pass in tmpgenc takes longer then a double in cce .. if you have the time by all means use tmpgenc .. although to be honest i have much better results using the CQ (constant quality) setting then the 2 pass vbr .. the problem is the CQ mode is unpredictable for the final size so some times you have to make 2 or even 3 goes at it to get it just right.

  8. thanks for replying so quick... but aside from playing/calculating the psychical size of the files when done...

This is my dilema... when i put the DVD i just made in... the size on my tv is a little larger than that on the origional... like the DVD-R has ~2inches black space on the bottom and ~3 inches on the top and seems a little "stretched"... as the origional has like 4 inches black space on top and bottom and is proportionate.. i hope i'm explaining this correctly..

My firewire Pioneer A104 arrived yesterday and it looks like I might be able to finally burn a DVD-. I can now use my Compaq 1.1 gig laptop which seems to process a lot faster even using the usb port (it's wired for both usb and firewire). If the burner ever works I'm upgrading to a firewire card. The drive came with a new burning software and I will report on it as soon as I use it a while.

My question is there a compelling reason to use a DVD-R or a DVD-RW. The inexpensive Pringo DVD-RW I've been using might have been a contributor to my burning problems. The name brand DVD-RW I tried to burn last night stopped at 49% so I wondered about whether the DVD-R might work better?

  10. I unfortuantely can't help you .. i've never used the guide as i avoid authoring at all costs ..

    Rip dvd
ifo edit the main movie ifo file, strip out all but the desired audio and subtitle streams, recreate video_ts.ifo files
    burn new directory to dvd

that has worked on 95% of my dvds and is really easy .. those longer then 115mins on the main movie i am forced to re-encde with tmpgenc, read them into spruce up, save project (with no menu), read with ifoedit reconvert to 16:9 and then burn

Stand-alone DVD players have much better compatibility with DVD-R. Check the DVD Players link on the side menu of this website and see if you can find your DVD player in the list. This will help you determine if your player is compatible with DVD-RW.

I'm not sure why your burn would stop at 49% though. Did it lock up your computer or give you an error message?

How did you create the DVD (i.e. which guide)? If you authored it using DVD Maestro, did you make sure to change the movie to 16:9 Letterbox (the default is 4:3)?

I made the DVD using this guide and with the Digital-Forums DVD2DVDr guide (dummies one) I used the tmpg settings from there.

    http://www.digital-forums.com/dvd2dvdr/part3.htm

it's all 16:9 525 line etc... but it comes out wider. Again it's the first DVD rip/Burn i've made so i'll try it on a different movie and see if it comes out the same. thanks for the reply I'll also check Maestro's settings. i don't remember seeing or checking and different settings for 16:9 so that may be it. I'll try it when i get home. Again thanks

  14. To borrow one of Blackout's pictures:

You can't see it here, but under the menu (to the right of 25 FPS) it should list the aspect ratio of the movie (i.e. 4:3). Click on it to change.

Also, this thread has 3 tutorials by Blackout, and one tutorial by me...which one are you following?

The one on the first page... it seems like that may be what i'm doing wrong. Crap... i just wanna run home now and find out. DAMN WORK! LoL

    thanks

  16. LOL

The first page post by Blackout includes:

There are 3 options, if you have:

1:/ An original DVD that is Single Layer
2:/ An original DVD that is Dual Layer but the actual movie is small enough to fit directly into a 4.3GB DVD-R. (ie the DVD is full of extras that you can lose)
3:/ An original DVD that is Dual Layer and the actual movie is NOT small enough to fit directly onto 4.3Gb.
And a couple of posts down I list my alternate tutorial for Option #2 (using IFOEDIT to strip the DVD).

I would assume you are using Option #3, as you are transcoding the video. I just want to make sure we are on the same page.

  17. I'm using the 3rd option

  19. Thanks for all your help... one last problem i'm having is that DVD2AVI I'm only getting 2ch 192Kbps why isn't it 6 ch?

  20. In DVD2AVI, under Audio...Output Method, make sure to select Demux All Tracks. Then you can choose which one you would like to use. At the moment, you are probably only demuxing the 1st audio track. Depending on the DVD, the 1st track could be 2 channel stereo or the 5.1 ac3 track.

    Dear EnemyWithin:

I have now graduated to being able to do single layer movie less than 4.6 using DVD Decoder's read and write function that plays!!

When I am using your tutorial to reduce the size of a movie to fit on a single DVD I get an error message. I have all my software and editied files in the same directory. When I am in IFOEDIT and have stripped out the steps and move the edited file to a new folder in my same directory in the C drive--when the file is finished processing, I get the message that the source file does not exist?

It then does the updating of the VOBs or whatever it is and then I close and re-open the new file in the destination directory in IFOEDIT to do the last step and try to burn it and it doesn't work.

Is that error message significant? Also--what happend to the step of making the movie Region 1?

9). Wait for IFOEDIT to create the new .ifo's and .vob's.
    10). Close IFOEDIT.
11). Open IFOEDIT and open the new "VIDEO_TS.IFO" in the destination directory from step 6.
    thanks

At this point (after multiple attempts), you are probably conditioned to do some steps without even thinking about it. It is probably one of these steps that you have programmed yourself to do incorrectly.

Here is what I would do:

1). Go thru the process that isn't working for you and write down each step (on the computer so you can send it). And I mean EACH step exactly as you are doing. Go to http://www.hyperionics.com and get the trial copy of Hypersnap. Then you can take screenshots as well (as as JPG at 75%).

2). Compare your notes with the tutorial and see if you are missing something or doing something incorrectly.

3). If step 2 doesnt fix the problem, then email me the notes with screenshots and I will look them over for you.

  23. lynnsabc's problem has been solved. If you use DVD Decrypter to select the movie for you (in IFO Mode), it seems that it doesn't select the VIDEO_TS.* files as well. Make sure that you select at least the VIDEO_TS.IFO file as well as the main movie files.

I am trying to copy "Black Hawk Down" and as you know it is 5.16gig when you take all the crap out.

I don't have a copy of DVD Maestro, so how do I reduce the size to fit on a 4.7 DVD-R?

    Thanks

  25. Hi Enemy..

First of all..Easy way to rip and strip DVD with ifoedit. BUT one Q. I have created a backup of a dvd, tested it on my softdvd player and it works fine. Both subtitles are audio tracks are working fine. But when i try it in my standalone DVD it doesn't work..Bad Disc it says... I followed u guide and the disc structure look like this

    Video_ts\video_ts.bup
    video_ts.ifo
    Vts_01_0.bup
    Vts_01_0.ifo
    and then Vts_01_1.vob to vts_01_5.vob

Have I forgot something or are some standalone dvd players not dvd-r compatible??

    best regards

DVD Maestro doesn't transcode video. You will need to use ReMpeg2, TMPGEnc, or CCE for that. I have used all 3 and recommend CCE if you can get it.

    Hells Elf,

Some DVD players aren't DVD-R compatible, but most are. Check the DVD Players link on the menu bar to the left for more information about your player.

    Basic checklist:

1). The root of the DVD must contain both a VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folder (and they MUST be capitalized, as must every file in the folders). All the DVD files must be in the VIDEO_TS folder.

2). You must burn in UDF format. Make sure you are using the latest version of your burning software and find a tutorial on how to use it to make video DVD-R's.

3). Try different media (especially if you are using cheap, generic stuff).

If it plays fine in your software DVD player, then you have successfully used IFOEDIT. Now you just have to get the info on a compatible DVD-R in the correct format.

  30. hey breakout (and others reading this thread),

thanks for a great guide, I love it.but i do have some questions/suggestions.

    1. it only mentions AC3 audio and not DTS, can u rip DTS too ? if yes, then does it suffer from delay also ? if yes, how can u correct it ? is there software for it like ac3 delay corrector ? or can i only use Meastro for that ?

    2. if all that DTS stuff can be done, then maybe u can add it to the guide

    3. at the very end you speak about CCE, which I prefer using over TMPEG, maybe you can also include that into the guide instead of mentioning at the very end

well thats it, hope tot hear from you! (or anyone else who can give me the answers on DTS and stuff)

thanks again for all your work!

    Tim.
