I have downloaded a video which was supposedly in Divx format but the extension is ogm. I cannot view the file and have Divx 5.02 installed.

this sounds like a re-encoded film and normally i would suggest to not bother with a film re-encoded from divx and compressed more. but anyway here is what it is and where to get codec's .. the format itself is fine.

OGG/OGM Formats
What are .ogm files and why are they better than .avi?
OGM is a container for audio and video streams, similar to the AVI container which has dominated until recently. The OGM container file offers several improvments over the the existing format:
Faster Seeking: You are able to click anywhere on the seek bar and have your video seamlessly play from that point without the "fast forward" effect caused by frame reconstruction.
Error Tolerance: The OGM file format handles errors in the video file more gracefully than AVI. If there is corruption of the video stream, a common occurance, the decoder is able to skip the damaged parts and continue on to the next part, without "hanging." As well, it can play incomplete video files(!) If your download fails, leaving you with a partial video file, you are still able to view the part that you have.
DVD-like Features: Multiple audio streams and subtitling are supported. It's now possible to choose from multiple languages, and to have more than one subtitle stream. If enabled, you will be able to view a video independently of its subtitles. As well, six-point surround sound is supported. -
Thanks. I d/l the codecs and filters but the video will not play. What a waste of 700MB! Thanks for the help.

As I understand it, an OGM file is an AVI (usually DivX format, but not always) with an Ogg Vorbis audio stream rather than MP3 or uncompressed audio. The other benefits listed above are news to me, but I haven't read much about it. It should just be a matter of finding the right Ogg Vorbis codec and you should then be able to view this media in your favorite player. I'll try to find where to get these for you; let me know if you have already solved it.

I have the OGM Filters installed, but I seem to be running into weird problems, I opened teh file up in Virtual Dub Mod, and it shows the Video but no Audio can be heard, opened it up in BS PLayer, and played the file for maybe 3 seconds and then just closed, opened up the file in Windows Media Player Classic and it only played the Audio for 15 Secs, no Video. Now I am lost because I don't know what to do...? any sugesstions...

Wow, a year old thread resurfacing.
To make this short, I will just tell you what I do.
Download Gspot
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/
Use this to make sure that the codecs used in the video are properly installed and it will also give you information about Directshow's failure to render the video and/or audio streams.
Download ffdshow
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ffdshow/ffdshow-20030424.exe?download
install it, then open the configuration dialog through the Windows Start Menu, at the top of the utlity, cliock on "codecs" make sure that XviD and all of the DivX boxes are checked, apply, and exit. This tells Direcshow to use the ffdshow decoder rather than the current default.
Let me know if you need more detailed instructions,

WOW, it's working, now only 2 Problems I have now, The Video works, Audio works, I can switch Audio, BUT the Video Seems to be cut, like lets say something is broken in 4 parts, well I can see 3/4 of the movie and the other part is playing in the end, I hope you know what I'm saying, like the first part is playing in the end, which is separated by a black line...now when I switch to subtitles, they seem to be blurred out...? completely..any ideas on that... you have been very very helpful..I wish I could've found this before...this topic resurfaced because I didn't want to make a new thread...very helpful...
P.S: - I used GSpot and everything is installed perfectly except that in Audio Codec section it says thatWav_Format_Ogg_Vorbis_1Disabled: rendering of multi stream audio not supportedCheck out my guide on converting .OGM format to an SVCD with Selectable Subtitles and Multiple Audio tracks.

I think I understand what you mean, although I'm not quite sure on what you mean by "like the first part is playing in the end, which is separated by a black line" read around the guides here and see if you can figure out how to take a screenshot of this. I think you are going to need to edit the file in VirtualDubMod (look under Tools on your left), if you can get it to open the file, if not, try a program I just discovered called Video Fixer:
http://www.siskinsoft.com/
it costs 40 bux, but you can try it free for 15 days, this is the best app I have found for repairing AVis, as well as the easiest.
don't worry about the error message gspot gave you about the audio streams, that's normal for multi-audio stream AVis

This is an AVI Fixing program, I have a file with the extension .OGM...but still I gave it a try, I changed the extension to .AVI and loaded it in, but it says that the file is already fixed...? I will try to put a screen shot of the picture as soon as I learn how to...

BTW there is nothing wrong with the FILE, it's the way it is being played...still looking around on how to take a screenshot...
