Can anyone recommend a brand of DVD-RW disk that will work in a standalone player?
I have used up (wasted) so many DVDR now that even an expensive one will probably be of use.
Thanks again

Optodisc DVD-RW discs work with my Pioneer DV-434. Not a bad price either at 2 bucks a pop at http://www.supermediastore.com.
Cheers,

depends on the player, mine was cheap but copes with every dvdrw ive tried, even 60p ones

I think you would be better off making sure your standalone player supports dvd-rw. Mine does but it has a hard time determining what type of disk it is. I was using a Verbatim dvd-rw disk for a a while a then tried the much cheaper princo manufactured dvd-rw (not the crappy princo dvd-r's) disks and found that they work just as well.

all players will take longer to load dvdrw and cdrw compared to dvdr/cdr, its the way dvd drives are configured

ok guys, what about DVD-Rs, not DVD-RWs that play in a stand alone DVD home player ?
was just posting on other forum with a guy who told me only apple DVD-Rs work fine in his experience.
i refuse to believe i have to pay 5$ a piece.
i'd like to buy a bunch of them and i do not want to go wrong and buy say 100 or 200 DVD-Rs that do not play on my DVD home player 'cause they're basic crap...
thx again,

according to pioneer -- maxell dvd-r are the most compatable an apple are the second .. in my experiance I use only apple (just due to avaiability) and never problems...
but other disks its hit or miss -- on some players they will work ok and on other - not.

then i guess i'll have to buy DVD-RWs, since you all seem to have good results in burning and playing them back in DVD home players...
...is this why you prefer them to DVD-Rs ?
-
I would have guessed since DVD-RW are erasable, I would only store stuff there as a temporary measure. DVD-R may last longer.
-
DVD-R is definately more compatible than DVD-RW. My standalone won't play DVD-RW, but will play DVD-R. It really depends on the player and the media. Princo worked well for me, while Ritek didn't. Others have had the exact opposite results.

In the UK, SVP are doing Princo CD-RW that work great in my Sony DVP-S535 and a few other Sony decks I've been able to try.
URL correct as of 05/09/02:

Not bad for 99p a pop ! Just over £1 each if you want them in (jewel) cases.
Datasafes are 88p, but I can not vouch for these as I have not tried them yet. -
What mode are you burning in? Mode 1 or Mode 2.
I have DVD-RW that work in both mode 1 and mode 2
But DVD-R only works in mode 2 for players
My two cents worth. -
Mode 2, I think - I didn't tamper with the default settings in Nero, so whatever the application sets itself to when selecting DVD-Video is what I used.
-
I bought white label dvd-rw from www.bigpockets.co.uk and they run great in my standalone.
-
I have 3 DVD Players, one Sony and 2 Sampo. The only brand that works in all of them is Pioneer DVD-RW. Sometimes the player refuses to read the disc but after I open/close the tray 2-3 times starts playing the disc.
Is good if you want to try something
Good Luck
