I just barely purchased a Panasonic DMR-E30 DVD Recorder and was setting it up. I noticed a statement in the manual saying that cable TV broadcasts can only be recorded to DVD-RAM but not DVD-R. Is that really the case or just in terms of pay-per view (possibly copy protected) broadcasts?
I bought the damn thing to record some old TV shows but if I can't burn them to DVD-R for use in other players, it's pretty much useless. Any feedback on this would be appreciated before I go out and buy a bunch of DVD-R's.

Also, as far as future compatibility, etc. would I be better off returning this and buying the Philips DVD+R, DVD+RW?
    Thanks!

The machine will record from TV to DVD-R. Indeed, in one review of the previous E20, the reviewer mentions that "my home movie DVD now has about thirty seconds of a news show because I was silly enough to go and get a glass of water while burning video in real time". This was on DVD-R.

What does the manual actually say? You can't use the TimeSlip feature on DVD-R though. (That's where you can record a show and watch earlier parts of it at the same time, and that requires DVD-RAM.)
