All the DVD players I've tried so far haven't played PAL SVCDs, or have played them very badly (ie, only for a few seconds or start at more than halfway through the disc). No trouble with VCDs or NTSC SVCDs.

Basically I need a DVD player (US/Can) that can play all VCDs & SVCDs, including PAL.

If someone has one, please tell me the brand & model number as well as where it can be bought.

    Thanks

Tried that one already, found a large # of inconveniences with it:

#1 Extremely brittle body, I broke 2 in one hour.
    #2 Wouldn't play 90% of my VCDs
#3 Plays some SVCDs, doesn't play others

Kinda disappointed with it really, heard good things about it but this was one of the worse I've tried

My Sampo plays my PAL svcds with no problem. My model is the DVE-620 but I'm sure they all have the same playback capabilities. Check out this url http://www.sampo.com.tw/english/elect_div/showroom/dvd/body.html#5
If you're looking for something cheaper Target is selling a compact(it's advertised as a portable but it really isn't) dvd player by KOSS that plays everything. I couldn't get past the fruity colors of the unit but it's worth the $89.00 it's on sale for.
    Good luck!

    Wulf,
This site claims to have the best prices on Sampo models and if you find it cheaper, they have price matching.

Thanks, but the problem with ordering online is it can take a long time to get a refund or exchange, with shipping costs every time. That and there's no way to test them first to see if they support everything or not.

Appreciate the thought, but the only things I order online are things I know don't break or have very little chance of, like books, CDs, DVDs or software.

It's a lot easier to go back to a local store and bitch at the salesman than at some guy though email

I prefer to shop in actual stores myself Wulf. I'm not sure where you live, but do you have Target stores near you? Again, their KOSS player is affordable, plays everything and is hacKable.

I'm near Ottawa, Canada, I don't think I ever saw a Target up here, but I'll keep an eye out for those brands anyways. Gonna go through the stores tomorrow to try & find something

  10. I bought a Magnavox MDV450 (99.99 at BestBuy) that played all format disks, but the PAL playback looked stretched horizontally. I took the Magnavox back and bought a JVC XV-S300BK (129.99 at BestBuy). The JVC plays back NTSC and PAL VCD's/SVCD's beautifully, but it doesn't like XVCD's.

I've had a lot of good luck playing just about everything, including PAL VCDs, SVCDs and DVDs on my RCA RC5240P, purchased at Walmart here in Canada for about $200. Talk about your no-hassle return policy, but I didn't have to use it because the machine performs so well. I've had it for over a year with no problems.

    Hope this helps, eh?

BTW, wouldn't that be a good feature to add to the compatibility guide, an indication of which players support both NTSC and PAL?

Went out and bought the RC5240P today... 189$CAN..... awesome awesome AWESOME! Played every single disc I threw at it, including PAL SVCDs/VCDs.

    Thank you so much.

And for the price it has every kind of output you can imagine. This is a keeper.

    Thanks again!

  14. The Pioneer 343 plays them as well (I almost fell over when I tried it and it worked, didn't expect it to play at all). I didn't notice any cut areas/screwed proportions/etc., but it was a TV show, so I may have missed something minor.

    Real Crappy Appliances=RCA

That's how the store buying manager I know refers to them. Don't understand why your tests with the AD1500 went so poorly. I've had one for months and after the "upgrade" found at Nerd-Out I can play any disk in the world, including my Region 2 disks with no problems. All the SVCD's I've dumped down from the net play hassle free as do all the VCDs. Are you sure you didn't try out one of the newer decks like the 1200? Lots of places don't have the 1500 anymore. You could also have picked up an Advent TV from Wal-Mart as it says it can display PAL video. That might cure your problems. Radio-Shack also sells the Daewoo 9000N which is better built than the Apex and can also do wonders when tricked out. Hope the RCA works for you at any rate...
