    Hiya !

Could anyone please tell me how to make my video keep the 16:9 aspect ratio automatically whem shown on a 4:3 TV ? I am making my SVCD using TMPGEnc Plus 2.57 and the video is recorded in 16:9 on a DV camera (720x576). Should I resize the video or can I use surtain features in TMPGEnc ?

It's easy to do automatically with TMPGEnc.

Under the video tab, set the Aspect Ratio to 4:3 NTSC and under the Advanced tab set the source aspect ratio to 16:9 525 Line NTSC. Set the video arrange method to Full Screen (keep aspect ratio) and you're done.

Check the preview before encoding to check that sufficient letterboxing is taking place. The options above obviously only apply to NTSC video, use the PAL equivalents if required.

    Okay, but the original size of the recording is 720 x 576 (DV). Will I have to resize it to 16:9 (640 x 352, 480 x 270) ?

TMPGEnc will automatically resize the video to 480x576 for a PAL SVCD. The final aspect ratio will look incorrect when you view the encoded file in Windows Media Player but your TV will stretch the image to the correct aspect when played as an SVCD.

  5. If the 720x576 is in 16:9 and not 4:3, you have to add black borders on the top and bottom to the video. I think you can do this in Tmpgenc. Get the calculator and calculate how many lines you need to add to get from 4:3 to 16:9 aspect ratio. It will be something like 720x766 pixels converted to 720x576.

Yes you can, following the procedure I outlined above.

This is unnecessary to convert 16:9 to 4:3 as TMPGEnc can automatically add/remove the borders all for common aspect ratios. If you want to encode the video to your own custom aspect ratio or do the process manually then use the calculator as suggested.

This is not true. I've just tried it and the above is not the case. What do I do ?

Whats the problem? Is the image stretched vertically or is it squashed? Did you setup the aspect ratio options within TMPGEnc like I described in my first post?
