I downloaded a superb copy of "The Others" with Nicole Kidman and it plays perfectly in Windows Media Player. I want to convert to VCD and that's when the problems start. It ends up with audio and video out of sync. It came down with the .avi tag HOWEVER VirtualDub says its not an .avi as does DivFix and when you right click and choose properties it reports that "properties are not available. I've extracted the audio with CoolEdit Pro2 and entered the video and audio seperately into TMPGEnc but it still ends up out of whack.
    Anyone any ideas??

  2. Trying downloading DVD2SVCD and use the AVI mode to convert the movie. I use to always get movies out of sync until I start using DVD2SVCD. It's a great program that basically does all the dirty work for you.

Yep, good movie, the end will catch you out

However its been a while now, but I would start by making sure you have the correct codec, don't let playback fool you...

If you load it into Vdub and it shows no information for the video then chances are your have a codec missing.

Did Vdub complain about it being a VBR ? You may need to save out the audio "uncompressed" at 44.1Khz before you can get around any sync problem. But if there are junk frames, you need to remove them before you do anything.

If Vdub wont load it at all after you install Nimo, it does sound like a Mpeg 1, but at 717,681 KB it must be a AVI, I think it uses the Ogg Vorbis audio codec, but its been a long time since I worked with it

Have you installed any other codec's ?
The new Nimo also has DivX 5.02.

If the extension is AVI, then right clicking should give 3 Tab's where mpeg 1 only give 1 TAB. Did you try renaming it to .mpg just in-case ?

What was the file size ? 700Mb would be an AVI

    To KingJohn:
I have DivX 5.02 Pro installed.
If I change extention to .mpg I get the 3 tabs but NO information in any of the three panels except file size.
So its not an .avi and its not an .mpg and file size is 734,905,336 bytes.

Well the size I posted above was the original release, however anybody could have re-encoded it to anything. So have you tried renaming it to ASF ? well anything is possible, and at the size you give for a full movie, it can't be a mpeg 1/2

When you load it into Media Player, select File > Properties, it shows the decoders in use, but don't get fooled if DivX pro pops up, just wondering if that could give some more information.

You say you can load it into TMPGENc !, from there you can select file > output to file > AVI/WAV etc

    Did as you suggested:
For Audio it says: Morgan Stream Switcher
For Video it says: DivX Decoder Filter
    Bit Rate: Unknown
    Media Type: Video

  9. I know how to fix that. It took me a while, but I finally got it.

Get nandub, save the audio to a wav file. Note, you can't use full processing mode. I went in and set the second stream to no audio, not sure if you need to do this.
Rename the file from *.wav to *.ac3 Then you can use Cliers AC3 Tools to convert it to wav again.

So, you treat this file as a AC3 file when you convert it. Works for me atleast.

There are some right funny codec's out there, think people are trying to give films so that they can be watched but not converted Like the old days of "How do I protect the CD I made"

Use Vdub AC3 see if that handles it, Don't know why your system cannot cope with the audio, even the standard Vdub will save and convert the audio without problems, I guess you still have something missing.

I guess you don't have the MJPEG codec installed either ?

One of your suggestions has helped. Used TMPGEnc to convert the file to a "recognised" .avi and it plays great, so now its just a question of converting it normally.
    Many thanks.

  12. maccool111, to load an AVI file in DVD2SVCD you first have to change it to AVI mode. Goto the "Misc" tab change the "Input File Type" to "AVI" then you should be able to load the AVI files instead of IFO's

To ALL who have posted advice, MANY MANY THANKS.
I now have an excellent copy of "The Others" in VCD (Mpeg1) format.
This is how I eventually did it:
I extracted the audio (CoolEditPro2) from the original file and saved it as an uncompressed .wav file.
Next I loaded the original movie file (unknown format) AND the .wav file into TMPGEnc and output as a DivX 5.02 .avi file (thanks to KingJohn).
I then loaded the new .avi file AND the uncompressed .wav file into VirtualDub(1.4) and did a direct stream copy making sure I set the video frame rate to "Change so video and audio durations match". I then loaded this "new" .avi back into TMPGEnc (only settings were for VCD - PAL) and encoded.
Audio and Video in perfect sync.
Once again many thanks to all. :P :P
