  1. hey all,
looking for some help with the following:

Is there an encoder capable of converting a 704x480 3 min avi file, to a 704x480 High Res VCD NTSC format for burning in EZCD Creator 5 Platinum?

I have already made the standard VCD version using TMPGEnc-0.11.27.111, but I loose color at distances and clarity that I believe are related to the resolution loss, is this assumption incorrect?

While the VCD I have created is acceptable for what I am doing, I am intersted in any information regarding the High Res format for VCD, a quick search of the website left me without links for High Resolution VCD, I am not looking for SVCD as the resolution ratio is wrong with what I am starting with.

What I am doing with the clip:

My clip is being displayed on a 4'x6' screen, with a brand new high resolution projector with S-Video input. DVD's play and look excellent, but at this time my VCD quality is comparable to VHS when displayed (is this normal?). When the avi file I began with is better than the VHS, I was hoping the higher resolution would improve the image quality.

The avi video is 3min 4secs at 704x480 29.87 FPS and has a file size of 585 megs, incase anyone is wondering about the quality I am starting at.

I appreciate any comments or advice.

    thanks,

  2. There are only two standard formats, VCD and SVCD other than DVD. The resolution for VCD is 352x240, and 480x480 for SVCD. There is no problem converting a 720x480 AVI file to 480x480 SVCD. In most cases, you will not see much difference between 480x480 and a 740x480 file. Simply run your AVI file through Tmpeg and convert it to a 480x480 SVCD. You will get around 40 min on a standard CD-R. If you want to keep the 720x480 file, then you have to burn it as a DVD, or a non-standard SVCD/VCD.

  3. Keep in mind that if you convert from 720x480 to 480x480, you will have to play the SVCD disk in an actual SVCD player that understands to stretch it back to the correct aspect ratio...otherwise if will look badly squished.

TMPGEnc can be used to encode an XVCD...you just have to create a custom template. I have one created for almost exactly that purpose, that produces files the VCDImager/vcdxbuild will accept. EZCD Creator will almost certainly refuse to accept the nonstandard MPEG, though. If you want the template, send me an e-mail. (TMPGEnc .mcf (template) files are actually just simple text files)

Also remember to encode to MPEG1 for VCD, and MPEG2 for SVCD.

  4. ah ok, figures that High Res setting on EZCD creator is just there to convince me it could be done when it's not, I'll see how the SVCD turns out and looks on the dvd player.
I made my own template for the 704x480 setting, but ezcd creator is the only burning application I have atm. I'll try VCDImager tonight and see if it will produce a viewable VCD with my template.

Thanks for the advice, time to see what happens.

  5. Whoops, one more note about the burning part...VCDImager produces bin/cue files that can be written with CDRWin or BlindWrite burning software, but not the commercial apps. Trying to burn it as an ISO image will cause it to drop crucial information. You can get shareware versions of both of the above software. Good luck.
