  1. Hey everyone I was wondering if anyone had used these, I have a lot of questions.

To start if your not familiar with the CD-R99 format it is basically a regular CDR with an 870MB data storage capacity. There are also CD-R90 discs that are 800MB in capacity. Interested!? You can buy them at www.allmediaoutlet.com

So onto my questions for anyone that has used them.

    1. Have you been successfull in using these discs for VCD, SVCD projects?, and if so, has it been to their full capacity?

    2. Is there anything I should be aware of in burning/authoring of this capacity.

    3. OVERBURNING, Is the overburn ration the same as the 700MB CDR's

By this I mean that we know we can fit 800MB on a 700MB cdr, which is basically about 14-19MB extra storage space per 100MB "Quoted" storage space.

If this holds true to these CD-R99 discs, that would put us overburning at about 992-1035MB !!!! woohoo ........hopefully

These are my big questions, hopefully someone can help me out here, If not I have already ordered some and will be posting my results for everyone as soon as I can.

My last side note for thoses that are interested,
These CD-R99 discs are known to have issues burning to full capacity at write speeds above 4X, just letting you know. A small price to pay for the potential to burn 1 Gig on a regular CDR in my opinion.

Thanks in advance for any help with this.

  2. Yes, I've used them, and 90's too, both to full capacity, they do work OK, but I think they are a little unstable on some other CD devices for reading back. Yep, ~1GB is the limit. Some drives simply cannot read the data wound that tightly all the way to the end.

DO NOT use 99s unless you know that your drive is capable of burning a 90+ minute CD, some LG burners (all the way to 99) do and so do plextors (96mins!).

Interesting to hear that they have problems burning above 4x, I didn't know that.

DVD drives are more likely to be able to read a 99 than an ordinary CD drive.

  3. Reggie, thanks alot, everything was as I had hoped....

Some questions for ya Reggie and anyone else that has used these successfuly.

What software were you using to Author and Burn?
Anything I should be aware of? any setting to override or compensate for?

Thanks for any tips on this.

  4. I just used nero, I set it's overburn feature to 'on' and told it max time of 99 mins. Nero will tell you that the file is too large for the disc capacity, and ask if you want to overburn, tell it yes and your off, go and make a cup of tea and a sandwich and wait for it to finish.

  5. I have used about 150 of the 99min. ones, burned all the way out and use only for VCD's and SVCD's, usually from 925MB to 1025MB, but to ever get the .dat file back off again don't burn past 950MB.
I burn them all the time a 8x, use to get them at CompUSA but they quit carrying them, still have about 80 left though, don't hardly use them now that I switched over to DVD-R.
