After I did a clean install of XP a few months ago my rip speeds wouldnt go over 1.2x. So last night after adding some rounded DMA cables on all my HDD's and dvd/cdr's and changing my dvd to master and cdr-w to slave on IDE 2 my rip speeds are now @ 6-9x.
What gets me though is. Before when I went to device manager and checked the DMA on ide-2 it had both devices as 'DMA if possible' and master was listed as transfer mode as DMA mode2 and slave as PIO. But now there both listed as DAM. I dont know why there both DMA now but werent before when all i did was change the master and slave around.
So if your having rip speed issues maybe try switching the master/slave around.

I have my CDRW as master and my DVD-Rom as slave on IDE-2. I tried changing my DVD-ROM as slave on IDE-2 with my 40 gig WD drive, and DMA was available now, so I changed my CDRW and DVD to IDE-2 and both of my HD's to IDE-1 and that fixed it....
