Hi y'all. I have nero 5 and Im trying to burn mpeg files that are widescreen and have great resolution. The problem; nero keeps streching out the image when I make a VCD. I've checked the options and preferences when making the VCD to no avail. Is there a way to crop the image or what not into widescreen? Any help is very apriciated in this.

  2. VCD standard does not actually support widescreen (16:9) as such. There are a number of ways the effect can be achieved tho. If you search the forums you should find many different ways to solve your problems but I would expect most of them to involve using TmpGenc for encoding, Nero is a poor encoder at the best of times.

Thanks. I followed your suggestion. Now I guess the only problem is that it doesnt support avi type (?). Anymore suggestions?

  4. What doesn't support avi type, TmpGenc? Oh yes it does. If you are having problems opening a particular type of avi in tmpgenc try another search.

  5. here's what I do.

I use virtual dub and smart resize my file to something that "looks" like widescreen mode--I don't know what the true diameters are for widescreen but I make mine 320x140

then I use Ulead video studio 6 and put a black picture as my storyboard and I use the newly cropped file as the overlay and it makes the VCD compatible 320x240 mpeg file but the picture inside is 320x140

this might not be "true" widescreen or letterbox but I like it!

you can download Ulead Studio 6 off of Kaaza(are we not suppose to mention Kaaza here??)

doing it this way also cuts down on those "computery" blocky digital specs that you see in full screen mode as well.

  6. hain23x, as I am sure you know, what you are doing is letterboxing. Tmpgenc can do this for you, using suitable settings under 'video arrange method'.

If your avi is widescreen selecting full screen keep aspect ratio in Tmpgenc under video arrange method will provide the letterboxing you need.

As you say, the black bars top and bottom require very little data, leaving more data rate for the actual picture and thus improving quality.
