I have come across a site selling TDK DVDRs for around $2.50 each. I am tired of buying generic crap and TDK is a name brand.

I was just wondering what kind of experiences everyone has had with TDK discs.

  2. You better find out if the discs Say TDK or if they are TDK OEM (NOT TDK).

Ebay has thousands of supposedly TDK discs for 2 bucks a pop, but after contacting TDK we have all learned that they ARE NOT from TDK in any way shape or form.

I would be willing to bet if you ask, the discs do not SAY TDK anywhere on them OR the packaging.

    Thanks for the reply.

Yeah, I've seen the Ebay sellers. It really pisses me off that people are still getting ripped off by these jerks.

The company I'm talking about (cdrdvdrmedia.com) is fairly reputable- although thier generic media is crap. You can buy DVDRs there for as little as 0.76 each. But you get what you pay for.

Anyway, I've seen several sites offering TDKs in the $2.50-$3.00 range so I didn't think the price was that unusual.

  4. I just ripped 2 movies using TDK 2X DVD-R that I just bought and both movies play fine without any problems in both my Sony DVP-NS300 and my Toshiba SD-2800.

    I paid $2.70 each from http://rima.com/

  5. Is it possible that these discs are manufactured by the same company that supplys TDK and the retailers are just stretching the truth a bit.

I also ordered TDK from cdrdvdrmedia.com. I got unbranded discs (they have the correct manufacturer ID, and they say tdk on the inner circle, but they're clearly repackaged by the vendor -- see image). That kindof pisses me off... Since you can get official TDK discs for the same price elsewhere.

You can't really see the TDK logo on the disc, as this was scanned and looks kindof funny.

Got to pricegrabber.com (use the link on the left! support vcdhelp in ways that don't cost you anything :) and you'll see someone selling the TDK 10-pack for about $25. The one I saw showed the official packaging and the TDK part number that TDK actually sells. I haven't ordered yet, but that's my next order.

While I'm sure these are TDK discs of some sort, they're most likely from a spindle (which TDK says they don't sell... hmm...) and then hand-packaged into cases and shipped out. I'd have appreciated being told this beforehand... because I figure the product a company sells out it's back door in bulk is usually not it's finest accomplishment.

BTW I've only burned one of those so far (burned ok) so I can't complain about quality so far.

I asked TDK if they currently sold unbranded TDK disks in 100pk spindles. Here is the reply from TDK:

    Dear Valued TDK Consumer:

Thank you for taking the time to write to TDK, it's nice to hear from you.

Currently, TDK does not package DVD media in 50pack or 100pack spindles for
the US market. We are only selling the DVD media in 40pack configurations
within the US market, therefore we are unable to determine if the DVD's you
    mention are TDK product.

Our recommendation would be to purchase TDK's DVD media from reputable
    retail store or web sites.
    (Emphasis added)

An alternative is to provide us with your name and the state in which your
residing. Once we receive this information, we'll provide you with a TDK
Authorized Sales Representative, who will assist you in finding TDK product
    locally.

Once again, we thank you for taking the time to bring this matter to our
attention. If we can be of some assistance in the future, please let us
    know.

    Thank You
    Customer Services Department
    TDK Electronics Corporation.
When I wrote to the actual vendor on eBay, here is what he said:

    Hi,
They are TDK brand, but there is no label on the DVD-Rs. We know they are
TDK because we test them with our DVD manufacture identifier software.

    Sincerely,
    XXXXXXX
    Vinpower.net
I am assuming that they are using ADVDInfo to query the manufacturer's identity.

I would like to be able to pick up quality disks for less than $2 again (I picked up 30 MAXEL DVD-R's for about $60, but that deal is long gone). I would be leary about these "TDK's".

However, I have heard that they sometimes burn at 2X.

mboynton, doesn't ebay have some kind of fraud protection, your loss is limited to $50 or so? Maybe there's a minimum where it kicks in, though. Check it out, and report the f**ker also.
