  1. Is there a program out there that will let me convert a VCD to an SVCD?

    It might take two steps.
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

  4. Well, depending if you have a .dat or a .mpg file.

What i mean, if you already have a VCD disk, you likely have your video as a .dat file. So, you can use VCDGear to extract that file back to your HD.

When you have that .mpg, just use whatever encoder to to go from mpg1 to mpg2 format (TMPGenc is an example).

Look on the left hand menu under "Convert" on how to proceed and "Tools" to get the software you need.

    Good luckl

  9. would this process makes the quality any different (better or worse?). The file size would increase.

I know the reason was to enable it to be watched on the player-but barring that, what would be the impact as far as quality is concern?

  10. same quality at best, bigger file, possibly, but do what you have to in order to make it play.

All SVCD compatible dvd players are required to also play VCDS. I suppose its possible that your dvd player is not built to spec or that you have a firmware limitation but my guess is that you are simply not authoring your vcds correctly.

Transcoding a VCD to SVCD will always result in lower quality. Increased bitrate is irrellavant since the quality cannot be better than the source, but the increased resolution is a major drawback because you are stretching your picture from a smaller resolution to a larger one. Even if you use enough bitrate to support this resolution, your video will still be blurrier and the artifacts will be more apparant.

I would analyze my VCD authoring process and look for any problems before trying to convert VCDS to SVCDS.
