  1. I have an xvid file with an ac3 stream. I want to convert the file to (s)vcd, I have tried using Headac3he and besweet but neither of them can open my ac3 file. I am following the guide to the letter and I have converted an ac3 file once before but I'm having no joy with this one. I am sure it is an ac3 stream it says tag 2000 in Virtualdub. The file plays back fine on my pc with sound in winamp3 so I know the sound source isn't corupt.

    any ideas greatly appreciated.

this is from vdub help menu-

    Extracting audio from a file

    · Open the source file in VirtualDub.
    · Select Save WAV… from the File menu.

The resultant file can then be loaded into any application which plays WAV files. When doing this, it’s best that the audio mode be set to Direct Stream Copy so that the audio isn’t processed or decompressed. Note that the range selection options don’t work when extracting audio, so the whole audio track will be extracted.

    this may help

  3. this was no help at all I can read the virtualdub help file too but the extract you showed applies only to video files with an uncompressed (PCM) sound track. My file has an ac3 soundtrack this cannot be opened in any program that supports wav files since it isn't a wav file. I have two programs that should be able to open ac3 files (Headac3he and besweet) but neither of them will open the file. I get an error 58 (unknown file format)
Really I'm looking for someone who has had the same problem and solved it, but anybody with a suggestion is always apreciated.

can you open at all in vdub
if so under audio tab use full processing and choose the codec that you want to use for compression and see if that does it.

if not use sonic foudry 6.0 or higher this is what i useand it opens video files and lets me convert audio to anything i want (provided you hve all the plugins). i just dont have any test files to try in vdub sorry

    oh yeh cool website

  5. since you were all so slow in getting back to me I had to solve the problem myself. I found that I could decode the file no problems using azid, which I found a bit strange since the besweet gui uses azid and that wouldn't open the file.

cheers for all the help I got anyway

btw, if you use sonic foundry, make sure you have Soft Encode 1.0 installed with it. you wont need to use any other audio software again
