  1. Now I know I haven't got the fastest PC (PIII 850Mhz, with 256meg Ram), but alot of people seem to be able to rip and encode a damn site faster than me, am I doing something wrong ?

It takes on average about 25mins to rip a DVD with my Pioneer 10xDVD

and the last movie I ripped (The Matrix) took around 15 hours to encode using DVD2SVCD, with CCE 2.5SP encoder (and I thought it was quicker than TMPG !!), mind you the quality is superb !

Those times sound about right. You have to remember that you are encoding 5-6-7 Gigabytes of data and squeezing it down to fit on 2/3 CD's.

The encoding time is totally dependent on computer speed. I recently upgraded from an Athlon 1.3ghz to a Pentium 4 1.8Ghz overclocked to 2.4Ghz and encoding time is down to about 6 hours all in. The Athlon was giving me an encoding time similar to yours so I don't think you're doing too bad.
