  1. Hi all, ive asked this question before and still havent recieved an answer so it would be really cool if i can an answer since i need one soon, I was wondering whats the difference between these DV kits that have firewire cards and just getting a plain regular firewire card, will it do the same thing, i want to use my DV cam to capture video through firewire. If its just an issue of software thats bundled i dont care cause i already have adobe primere and several other programs. also my DV cam also supports a USB connection, so would i be able to use that without losing info, i understand that firewire is MUCH faster, but can i do with out losing frames or quality. Thanks for any help you can give. 8)

The difference is indeed the bundled software.

I personally bought a $30 firewire card from CompUSA and have had nothing but success. It even came with a stripped down version of Ulead Video Studio 6 (DV version or some such).

As for the USB interface, I don't know what kind of camera you have, but those are typically used for transferring still images only from a memory card (ie. the MMC card in Canon ZRs and Memory Stick in Sonys).

It would be quite long download to transfer 18GB (one hour of video) over the 12Mbps USB interface.

    Hi,

Some people might believe the're getting a better quality firewire card bundled with video software from a "reputable" vendor; or at least a better warranty.

I've been using no-name firewire cards for about a year with no problems.

Some computers/cameras/software (very grey area) have been reported to not work with certain chips on firewire cards. If memory serves, the most common problem was caused by the Texas Instruments xxx23 chip (I have TI xxx26 chips). Finding-out which card uses which chip can be a problem unless you can see the actual card (with a magnifying glass?)
