  2. Three pithy old sayings apply to improving low-quality video:

You can't squeeze a lump of coal into a diamond.

You can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear.

    You can't polish a turd.
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

  3. hey Mirror, you replyed to this message with something you obviously thought was clever... yet it obviously does not belong in the advanced section which from your responces to my posts you seem to wish to police. your cute little one liners are nothing that all we "advanced" people dont alread know! maybe your 3 points should apply to how people should respect your advice, no? Especially the 3rd one...

(man, hasnt even seen "3rd Man"(or "The Lady from Shanghai", or "The Stranger" or "Citizen Kane(band wagon, probably the only orson film you have seen!)" yet has that image!)
See my profile for my neato cool PC config specs (I think i might have one of the most "bad ass" setups on here!!)

  4. Lantry I think Mirror_Image's post is valid. His post was a lot more relevant to answering the poor guy's problem then yours is.

Anyways to elaborate a bit on what Mirror_Image said, there's really no way of getting a better picture out of downloaded stuff. You can try using different filters (like smooth, denoise, sharpen, etc) to give the appearance of a better picture of course you're going to have to reencode from an already bad source so you're going to get another generation of picture degradation. DiVX, MPEG, and most codecs are lossy so everytime you encode you're losing more and more information from the original source. If you want better picture quality I suggest you go pick up the DVD instead of watching a movie some poor sap with a camcorder recorded at the theatre.

It is better to download DVD rip's, the quality of these DivX movies are as good as a DVD. When converted I am sure you will be more than happy.

Downloading CAM's of new released movies will give poor quality, sometimes the Reelers or Screeners are better.

If you use Kazaa, limit your search to 700Mb and search for DVD

The Standard Templates are just as good as anything.

Your only real option is frameserve and filter using AVISYNTH. Check the AVISYNTH forums on www.doom9.net. The filters in Tmpgenc are respectable they lack many options available using AVISYNTH. Since we are on the subject of quality I would also suggest using CCE to encode rather than Tmpgenc. CCE has options not available in Tmpgenc (proper multi-pass VBR being the main one).

A wide range of smoothers, sharpeners, noise removers are available for AVISYNTH and might increase the quality a bit.

There are no hard and fast rules of which filters to use and each one has a load of settings. You will need to experiment a little to find out which works best for your particular clip.

    Good luck.

  10. I think so too, it takes million of years and so will you, if you wanna get the best quality out of d/l file you need to use all the best setting in TMPGenc, such as Motion serch pricision to Highest Quality, 2 pass VBR, apply all the filter you can have.

most people are happy if they can keep the quality close to the source. there is no way ........unless it's a cartoon and you use sharpness.

and if you could wait to get a diamond from a lump of coal, the diamond would be much smaller than the lump of coal. so you can always reduce the aspect.
