  2. VCD, like audio cd, is based on length in time, not file size. You can have 74 minutes (or 80 minutes) of video on a single VCD disc. So if you have three 21 minute cartoons, you can put them on one VCD, even if each cartoon is 610 MB for a total of 1830 MB.

yes and no...if you are using standard VCD, then yes, a 74 minute CD will hold 74 minutes of video. it will, however, not end up being 1830 MB or anything ridiculous like that. 80 minute CD will hold a little over 800 MB of mode 2 data(audio, (S)VCD)
if you are encoding either in SVCD, or non standard (X)VCD, then the 74 minutes will not necessarily hold true, the length of movie you will fit will be dependent on the bitrate at which you encode.
what are you askin' me for...
    I'm an idiot!

  4. Right. I was talking solely about vcd, not svcd. And I suppose I wasn't clear enough - I was trying to make the point that VCD is based entirely on time - the MPG will fit on the disc so long as it's under 74 minutes. Just like audio cd's - I could have 1.2 GB of wav's, but if they combine for less than 74 minutes, they'll fit on an audio cd due to the conversion to .cda.

    No, you were clear enough.

It's just that some people don't realize that "VCD" refers to a specific standard, and not to every type of MPEG video burned on to a CD-R/RW, but then that's to be expected, since reading comprehension isn't a universal hobby.
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."
