i am trying to burn an avi movie using nero 5.5 but it says unsupported file format can anyone help

Don't use Nero to burn AVI's, most of the time it will give problems.
However your problem is a missing codec, download an install the Nimo Codec Pack, and that should cure the problem. There are a few other codec's about, like www.divx.com DivX 5.02 but mainly Nimo has all the rest.

Use TMPGEnc and a VCD template to make the mpeg's for Nero to burn -
What are you trying to burn? If it is a VCD, you avi file needs to be a MPEG-1, if a SVCD, it needs to be a MPEG-2.
