  2. This looks attractive to me:

    http://www.canopus.com/US/products/advc-50/pt_advc-50.asp

But I'm not sure whether it will go to AVI or not. I saw the card in a computer shop today. It has a Philips encoder chip on it. So it will not be good to MPEG-1 as it is not a Winbond encoder chip.

  3. Almost good...

Use the 50 for the low price...it has to be built in and needs an extra firewire card without a TI chipset.

The (AVC?)- 100 is an external solution...same website..about $100,- more expensive, but worth it. Just connect it to a firewire card and it will convert anything (video/svideo/audio/pal/ntsc/secam) to and from DV over firewire. It also has a macrovision disabler (hidden feature).

So.. Read the capture cards section for this device only.

It's perfect for converting any old or new material to DV with a high to very high quality depending on the source.

Nice about it, it needs no drivers, can also convert back to play/record on vcr/tv, probably disables macrovision copy protection and will work on any future computers and operating systems, since it won't need a driver.

An other possibility is a standard TV card with a BT-8x8 chipset, it;s cheap, but you will get audio sync problems and not so good a video quality. It will take a lot more time to capture and create an end result. Price is lower though... See the PCTV from pinnacle for example.

If you want ultra high quality, buy a PRO-ONE from pinnacle...but it will cost you at least $1000,- or more...for which you could buy a DVD burner also.

    For any questions...just reply.

    Greetz.

    I absolutely agree with this.

Or think about the 'Matrox RT-2500', which is also of the same price-area of the Pro-One - if not, even cheaper, but captures (and exports!) analogue/DV to DV and DV to DV/analogue (the card has 2 IEEE1394 connectors on-board and a out-box via which analogue/SVideo can go in and out.
Result : you can mix original DV and analogue together using Premiere.
The card will convert the analogue to DV using an onboard codec.
But enough about this commerce - I think it's up to you to decide which one or what to buy (it's your money and your quality )

  7. Again...

If you want to try teh video thing, buy a tv-card...it will produce better then vhs quality (if source is better ofcourse) and probably will also filter macrovision. It's cheap $50,- to 80,- gives a lot of work, trial and error and probably audio sync problems on movies with long duration.

If you want to do it right, buy a ADVC 50 for about € 199,- or 100 for about $299,-.. it will pay of on the end and save you a whole lot of time.
But you'll have to spend some money to get it.

    Good luck.
