  1. i posted with this problem in the capturing forum a couple of weeks ago but got no response..and im still lost

    i have a P4 1.8A w/ 512MB RAM
    80 Gig WD HD
    AIW 7500
    WinXP Home

TRYING to capture at 704x576 w/Huffyuv

I drop frames (about 10 for every 30min of video) in EVERYTHING except AVI_IO, but this crashes all the time and i can never delete the files off the HD when i use it to capture. And besides i hate the file splitting.

I have tried AVI_IO, freeVCR, virtualVCR, MMC 7.5, VDub and iuVCR. I have successfully captured 1 hr with no frame drops at 352x576 with iuVCR but the audio was massivly out of sync.

But reading everyone post here i dont see why my machine isnt up to capturing at 704x576...DMA is enabled, i have no irq coflicts, drive is defragged (i have 95% of my 80Gigs free)... im lost.

why is AVI_IO the only thing I seem to be able to use? Is there anything that will do the same job without crashing and splitting files?

  2. hey. im in kinda the same boat with vdub i get a good amount of fram drops and the video always winds up out of sync. but aviio works perfectly. 5 frame drops on average during a 2 hour movie. but the audio and video are always in sync. as for aviio crashing i had that prob under win2k but dont have it in xp pro.

i to hate the fact that aviio splits the file. is there a registry hack out there that anyone knows of? i got the full version hoping there would be an option but there isnt.

  3. Uncheck Overlay in the video tab in VDub and check preview instead that made it so no frames drop for me. Maybe this will help, but before I did this I would drop more the 10 frames more like 20 for 10min. of cap. and there was nothing wrong with the clip after converting, no out of synch or nothing.

  6. @Billson. You mention that your "hardrive is 95% free". Am I to take it then your using your system drive as your capture drive too?
If so then I might suggest that you have to repartition your 80GB drive, or get a 2nd dedicated hard disk.
Using the main drive always is more likely to cause a strain on things. However if your only talking about 10frames that is relatively minor. Another factor to consider is whether it's actually the footage your capturing from may not be as good as you think it is. Sometimes there's simply a bad section of videotape,or interference etc. which makes a dropped frame unavoidable.
What happens when/if you've tried Virtual Dub? In it you can select to lock the audio to video capture.
The reason why AVI_IO might be crashing is that I think it's designed for VFW driver based capture cards, whereas if you're using XP your card probably has WDM drivers.
    Hope this helps...

this is wierd, I have the EXACT same system as you, but with the AMD 1800+ instead of the P4 (yours is more powerful), and I never lose a single frame. I use the Virtual VCR in the AIW MMC (TV option in the ATI program tab)

You shouldn't be losing any frames with your setup, I would try the partition suggestion, and make sure DMA is on, and make sure you are not running any other programs while trying to capture.
