  1. I have to turn the volume up so loud for it to even be audible when i access the clip. It has to be booming to be picked up, and the quality sucks!

The gurus may ask you to be a little more clear. Such as what were you capturing, what resolution, and what hardware/software were you using, for starters.
    Hello.

The volume? What volume? Might it be your TV? Receiver? PC speakers? Headphones?

And what exactly is this clip you speak of? MPEG? AVI? ASF? MOV? Is it on your HD? CD? VCD? SVCD? XVCD? DVD? VHS?

See? And I'm not even a guru...

If you have it as an AVI use www.goldwave.com (get MP3 plug-ins also) to improve the level before its converted.

Else use TMPGEnc to save out the audio then TMPGEnc to mix it back after you improved it. Vdub can also load mpeg and save WAV

    Browse > AVI
    Browse > WAV

Gold Wave > Load AVI (Audio)

Or use Vdub to save out WAV uncompressed at 44.1Khz

Mpeg (One of a few methods)

    TMPGEnc (Streaming)
file > output to file > WAV

Gold wave > WAV > Effects > Volume > Maximize
    Gold wave > SAVE MP3

TMPGEnc > Mpeg tools > Simple multiplex
    Video > original mpg
    Audio > MP3

(See also multiplex > add > mpeg > delete audio in list > add MP3)

    When saving MP3 select 44.1Khz 224

However !!, these type of mpegs's wont play on all DVD players, sorry so you may need to re-encode using the audio as the WAV after Goldwave
