Fairly simple and stupid(i would imagine) but...
What's the difference?

You mean, dual layer DVDs? It is pretty simple. Dual layer means more room is available on the disc and thus, more content. Dual layer discs are preferred over double-sided discs for obvious reasons... (you don't have to flip the disc)

Not sure on that one. I haven't picked up a DVD writer yet, so I haven't kept up on things. I'm not certain if dual layer stuff (writers or media) is available to "the public" yet. But I could be wrong.

ok thank you
I don't have a DVD writer either yet but i was wondering if its possible to write on a DVD-r(w) with just a cd writer ? -
Erhm, nope.
A Single layer DVD only means that there is only one layer on the dvd. it should be able to contain about 4.7 gig. If you have a dual layered dvd, you can just fit 9.4 gig on it. DVD recorders do NOT support dual layer DVD recording (yet!). Playback should work fine on every DVD player.
