  1. I have a 1 and a half hour movie I captured at 640*480 quality 19 with PicVideo MJPED codec. When I convert it to SVCD with TMPG I use the SVCD template but I change it to CQ VBR and 192 Audio. When I try to play it back on my DVD player it makes a beeping sound and goes in slow motion at certain parts of the movie. What is wrong?

    That's because you're created a non-compliant SVCD.
Be sure the SVCD (in tmpgenc) is set to resolution 480x480 (if you're using ntfs, if it's pal then it's 480x576). The audio must be set to '16-bits, 44.1khz, stereo' using bitrate 224kbps.

Know that the result at the TV won't be that good : while at TV it's using resolution 704 (or 720)x480/576, so your original source is enlarged from 640 to that 704/720 vertical size.

  3. Sounds like your dvd player can't handle the standard SVCD bitrates in the Tmpgenc SVCD template. I've had the same problem and I solved it by lowering the bitrates.

You should lower the maximum video bitrate to 2450 or 2400 (hopefully not lower). Also, lower the audio to 160. See if this helps or fixes the problem. Tell us what happens--does it improve or worsen or stay the same.

Regarding the beeping audio, that's very wierd. Make sure you use toolame to encode your audio. Download it (should be in the Tools section) and point Tmpgenc to use it to encode the audio. This vastly improves the audio.

  4. Indeed it does look like a bitrate problem.

What settings did you use in the CQ VBR dialog?

  5. In CQ VBR I used Quality 65, max bitrate 2520 min bitrate 0 and Audio bitrate 192. The strange part is that if I use constant bitrate 2520 and audio 224 the problem goes away. My DVD player is a Philips 793C 5-disk progressive scan DVD carousel, the manual says it fully supports CD-R as well as VCD and SVCD when I put the disk in it does recognize it as a SVCD and it says SVCD loading on the screen. I have also tried it in my Govideo DVP855 (supports VCD not sure about SVCD) and instead of beeping audio it makes the video jerky.

    P.S.

I will try lowering the Bitrate if you think it will help.

  6. It will be worth trying to find out if that is the problem.

It may well be that the encoder isn't quite as stringent as it should be and some frames are slightly over spec.

I have seen a bitrate viewer somewhere which shows the actual frame bitrate of a file while being played - link anyone?

  7. Ok I have fixed the problem but I am not exactly sure what fixed the problem. I changed the min bit rate from 0 to 500 and checked "enable padding not to be lower than min bit rate." I upped the audio from 192 to 224. I also used used VirtualDub to "inverse telecine" my captured file changing it from NTSC 29.97FPS to NTSC film @ 23.97FPS. With these setting I can fit 61 minutes of almost DVD quality video on one disk.

I might make another CD with my old settings simply lowering the bit rate to see if that is the problem but it takes about 4 hours to encode the video and I don’t really want to waste another CD.

Then first burn to a CDRW (to test it) - if it's okay, then burn to a CDR.
