    Hi
I have started creating VCDs from fairly average quality movies I've downloaded. I am amazed at the quality. On the puter the video is still average but on my standalone DVD player its great. Does a standalone DVD player have a better decoder in it???
I wont be bothering with SVCD and loads of discs cos VCD is just fine.

    Cheers

    Properly, the mpeg's are interlaced.
Each TV is (by default) interlaced, so if the movie also is interlaced you'll get very good quality.
Although VCD is NOT interlaced, the de-interlace process still generates some kind of movie that still will be better of quality then if the movie wasn't interlaced (SVCD remains interlaced).

The pixelrate of a TV is not the same as your computer monitor, that's why most often a movie can have a poor quality at your PC but still be great at your TV.
Don't think when a movie looks fine at your PC it will look fine at your TV too (because of this same reason : see above).

    Hi
Actually good quality movies normally look much better quality on my PC 1024 x 768 x 32bps x 100hz. But when they are average quality and I convert to VCD they looks great on the TV played thru the DVD player. I dont get the same quality thru TV out on my vid card so it must be my stanalone DVD player doing the biz.
I ripped Lord Of The Rings DVD and the mpeg1 was good quality but a tad fuzzy in the backround (like on a hot day) But on the standalone DVD player it looks great even zoomed in. Its only a Lecson DVD-900 but I bought it half price(£99) cos they have brought out a new model. But I am well chuffed it plays DVD SVCD VCD Mp3 CDA CDR .

    Cheers

  4. It has nothing to do with the decoding, it has to do with the difference between TV's and computer monitors. Normal TV's do not have anywhere near the resolution of even a normal VGA monitor. Without getting to0 technical basically TV's provide free anti-aliasing that's why you get the perception of a better picture. The downside to that is text tend to be hard to read on tv's. With the newer HDTV you're getting much closer to monitor resolution and if you ever watch a VCD on a HDTV you'll definately not appreciated it's quality :=)
