  1. Tonigth I decided to experiment and make a divx movie from an mpeg1 I had. It worked and I cked the properties and it said encoded in the divx format but the file seems way too big.

    My MPEG1 was 8MB

    The DivX was 13MB

Isn't divx suppose to be smaller? What could I be doing wrong in the divx settings?

It would help if you describe how you did it.

Maybe you selected to high video bitrate or didnt use any compression for the audio.

  3. what bit rate should I use and what compression for audio?

I used the default bit rate for the video I think it was 780k or so and I didn't use any audio compression but have several selections available.

    What settings ahould I use?

use mpeg3 or divx audio compression or else you will get huge audio (10 MB/min). Install latest nimo codec pack to get mpeg3 if you dont find it in virtualdub audio compresssion selection.
