im suprised you got Windows XP on that machine, i gave my old 466Mhz 160mb ram comp to the kids as i couldn't deal with using it any more, your hard drive is out of place on your system, i dont know what average ripping speeds are for a system like yours, but make sure you have DMA enabled for your DVD-Rom and if it is then all you can do is upgrade your system, i personally recommend AMD based systems as their cheap and very powerful, also when it comes to encdoing your ripped DVD it would also take days. Do you think losing the use of your comp for a few days is worth it for a 90min film.

I agree with Mart.
Your system is slowing you way down... as far as you havin Xp on that pc... I'd have to see it!! I think alot of it has to do with the DvD. I have a P4 1.8 and on X-Man I only got 1.0x most others I get around 5x-8x.
If you upgrade things will run ALOT faster all around.Living in a 3D world, Playing in a 3D world -
Just to hammer the point home, you need 128megs JUST to run XP!
Then add more to run your programs.
Probably what is happening is everything is swaping to your hard drive instead of to ram.I don't have a bad attitude...

I think the other posters are correct, you need a faster CPU and more RAM. I also think you need a separate 16X DVD-ROM drive to do your ripping. The Pioneer burner is not good for DVD ripping,it's too slow .

I think he'll be just fine with more ram.
I use both the Pioneer A-03 and a DVD-ROM drive for ripping. While the Pioneer is a bit slower, it's not that bad.I don't have a bad attitude...

If you can't replace or upgrade your system, then I would downgrade it to Win98 or 98se. I would never even think about running XP on a machine with only 64 megs of ram. The minimum for XP is probably 256.

I had XP on this comp but took it off as it was pre installed on the PC and i wanted an actual disc, so i removed it and went back to 98SE and its a lot faster, not as practical and not as stable but faster with certain things, look for a cheap copy of 98 for a start, my DVD-Rom only cost £39 and is an unbranded 16x and i can rip at speeds of up to 14x, its on average about 9, and most films only take about 7/8minutes with DMA enabled, you can get a AMD M/Board, 1200mhz Processor and 128mb of Ram for £103, where i live and i dont imagine its any different anywhere else, its the best option considering Windows XP Pro costs a lot more than that.
