When converting files in Nero, it takes hours and on one occasion a day and a half to convert from avi. to mpeg. Is this typical or is there something that I am not doing right? I appreciate any suggestions that may speed this up.

MPEG encoding very cpu intensive job, there are 2 way to speed up :-
1. Lower the bitrate and video quality
2. Upgrade your cpu -
One piece of advise DO NOT USE NERO TO ENCODE. Use tmpgenc to encode your mpeg, then use nero to burn. Nero is a good burning application, but a lousy encoder.
