  1. Hi,

I have a lot of AVI files that I want to share with my brother but when I burn them to disk as data files he cannot open them . I'm using Easy CD creator 5 and also Nero Burn 5. It won't let him watch them from the disk or even copy and paste them to his hard drive. He brought me a disk from one of his friends that had Lord of the Rings burned on it in AVI format and I was able to watch them with Windows Media Player and I could copy and paste them to my hard drive.

What am I doing wrong why can't he access my files the same way?
    Thank you

Sounds like someone has WinMe or Win2K, it doesn't (Always)include a file that is nec to open video files from CD's.....We discussed this a while ago on the site here...some times installing a DVD software player ...such as PowerDVD will fix the problem....even if you are not using PowerDVD to view the files....it installs new versions( or original) files necessary and it just works.
Some Win2K and WinME users have never had this problem but some do....

  3. Hi
thank u for u'r reply. I am running xp and I got the power dvd and it still said unsupported format when I tried to play back the avi file. I believe the problem is in the way I am burning it not reading it. All I want to do is archive ( burn ) my AVI files to cd so I can view them later on my computer from the cd allowing me to free up some space on my hard drive. I don't want to create VCD for lack of time right now. Any suggestions?
    thank u

  4. FYI
I'm using easy cd creator 5 and nero burn 5 to burn my AVI files as a data cd. my only other chioces with these two programs is audio cd, VCD, or mixed data and audio. Maybe someone knows of a program that can do what I need to do. I guess I need to burn a media cd. One with avi files that are playable?
    Help!

I'm confussed...you cant read stuff you burn??
Or others can't read stuff you burn??

You should be able to read the disc on the drive you burned it with....or something is definately wrong..
I use to have problems reading other peoples CD's if they did not "finalize" the disc....

  6. Hi
yeah I can't open it. I burn a AVI file to disk as data and then open it back up.it says I just burned the file ( harry potter.avi ), but windows media player won't play it back it says unsupported format. could this also be a finalize problem for me too.
how do I finalize the cd?
    thanks

In nero one of the last few tabs should have a box that says finalize cd...no further writting can be done...

But I dont think thats your problem....you should be able to open the file from your pC irregaurdless....maybe someone will correct me if I'm wrong about that.. I burn stuff to disc as data all the time and can veiw it just like its on hard drive.

You have the original file on your pc that you are burning to CD....will it play under MediaPlayer?? Or do you get the same message??

What type of CDR drive do you have? If you are using a CDRW you can still erase and reuse even after you finalize..

It sounds like they may be burnt badly or screwed up.

Get IsoBuster ( http://www.smart-projects.com/ ) or WinISO and try to extract the tracks down to the drives that way. (It bypasses the Windows Explorer and looks at the discs's raw structure so you can recover tanked ones).
