I recently received my Pioneer DVR-104 and have been experimenting with different authoring tools. So far I have found that Spruceup/Nero works well except that it won't play in my settop player (PC works fine). However, if I use Sonic MyDVD to author/burn (which came with the Pioneer burner), the settop player works fine. The problem with MyDVD is that the audio drops out about 20 minutes into it (apparentlya known issue). I really would like the Spruceup/Nero to work.

The error I get when I put the disk in is "Bad Disk", so my suspicion is that it is something in the format of the disk.

Does anyone know of a way I can compare the formats that MyDVD and Nero create? Maybe it is just a setting?? I am using the defaults of both programs. I have tried shutting off Joliet in Nero but that didn't work.

  2. In a post at http://forum.vcdhelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=107221, vitualis mentioned that Nero might not be making compatible menus-- you might post a comment there.

Also, what version of MyDVD are you using and what make & model is your set-top/standalone DVD player?

are you burning then as ISO/UDF, UDF, DVD-Video in Nero.

    Try burning in DVD-Video.

  4. Download the latest Nero Update (5.5.9.0) as there's a known issue that nero only writes a Computer-Compatible format (!UDF!) - it is seperately mentioned in the bugfixes section of the nero homepage

  5. Wow, that's not good news-- is there any low-cost commercial VCD authoring + burning program that just works these days?

Looks like Ulead's DVD Workshop might be a bargain for ~$300 if it actually produces viewable content. I'm going to have to check out if it can import MPEG1 without re-encoding the files and, if not, VCDEasy just might be the ticket.

UPDATE: Thanks for the tips. I am using the DVD Video option with the Nero wizard using version 5.5.9.0. I just tried hooking up my APEX 1100W and it actually works fine in that player, but not the Bose. The player that won't play is a Bose 321, but the Bose will play the same files burnt with RecordNow with all defaults selected.

    >Also, what version of MyDVD are you using and what make & model is >your set-top/standalone DVD player?

My DVD is 3.0. The player that won't play is a Bose 321. Works with MyDVD and RecordNow, but not Nero. Apex plays all the disks, but I wanted to send the Apex to my folks and that leaves me with the Bose.

I tried another test last night and used the exact same VOB files on the hard drive, but this time I burned using the Pioneer/Veritas RecordNow DX software that came with the burner. I burned as a "Data" disc, dragged over the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS directories, just like in Nero, and it worked on both players!

Why won't Nero play on the Bose unit? I used the same brand/lot of media in all tests. There must be some option that Nero is defaulting to that the other two softwares are not. Are there any good tools to compare the disk formats bewteen the working/not working disks?

Guess I will just have to use The Pioneer/Veritas software, but it still bugs me as to why nero won't play....

  7. I have the same problem in that I can convert a DVD-9 to DVD-R using IFOEdit and Nero and get it to work in PowerDVD but not in my set-top box.

However, if I take a DVR-R that someone else has produced and that I know works, extract all the files to my hard-disk and burn back using DVD-Video option on NERO (5.5.9.0) it will work. This suggests that there is nothing wrong with NERO but there is something missing or not quite right about the IFO files.

I am going to try burning with InstantVOB tonight to see if that has the same problems with my set-top box. You can pick it up for about £6.

BTW, do you like MyDVD otherwise? We're thinking about trying that one out if can import our VCD MPEG1 files without re-encoding and allows for some menu/thumbnail customizing. Also, if MyDVD works but you just have the sound-cuts-out-after-20 issue, why not download or look into the MyDVD 3.5 update? I heard that the 3.5 version fixes the audio issue.

    Thanks,
