The old pc dont care if its Pal or NTSC but your standalone will...As long as the DVDrom drive on your pc can play the DVD (may have to change the region) you should have no problem using Smartripper, dvd2avi and tmpg....the only thing the dvd is needed for is the first step with smartripper (may take an hour at most for that part) after that all the movie files are on your hard drive and you can take your time.

    Look at http://www.vcdhelp.com/sefy/?id=ClassicalGuide.html
    for directions.

  3. so the vcd's palyback is not affected by the original region format of the dvd? i.e. If I burn a VCD from a pal3 format it should play on my ntsc dvd player? (assuming that the player is capable of reading cdr's).. let me know! Thanks!

No...What I meant was you should be able to play on PC dvdrom drive cause it does not care if its pal..and you can usally change the region via your software.....That will allow you Rip the DVD ( decrypt and save as VOB files) to your hard drive. Then you run those through DVD2AVI which will generate two files, one that is the entire sound track and one that allows the vobs to be used by TMPGenc. Its with TMPGenc that you decide if you want a VCD or SVCD in pal or ntsc.....TMPGenc will encode the files into a compatable mpg video file....That will be burnt with a program such as NERO to VCD format and then you can watch on your stand alone DVD player....if it supports VCD.

    Hope that was clearer.....
