  1. Lesson learned, DO NOT PLACE VCR on top of Apex AD-1100W!! and or place the player on carpet because it will screw with the laser calibration. I say this because I had to return mine to Walmart a while back.

Also, don't drop it out of a ten story window!

  3. Since we're on the subject of Apex; Apex 5131 is prone to overheating too. I installed heat sinks on the processor chips and punched ventilation holes in the cover. This unit has a power supply that runs hot also.

I'm curious how placing on carpet could screw up laser calibration.

As for the 10-storey window---I reserve that for Compaq products.

Heat leads to expansion. I imagine the laser is on a fairly lightweight mechanism, and excessive heat could cause a very slight change, and we are probably talking about a mechanism that doesn't want to veer from its original calibration.

  5. well carpet isn't a flat hard surface, and the problems started after I did that so its more of an educated guess.

  8. Sounds like you need new carpet. Get rid of all af it and get a nice powder blue. That should fix it.
Take it easy. And if its easy take it twice.

  9. Hell, do just like I did on playstation, Dreamcast, X-box and SNES, cut out 2in tall round wooden feet, about 2-3in wide, apply very small amount of silicone stick on bottle of unit keeps it above everything allowing it to be cooler, specially when set on carpet.

  10. Nothing has happened to my Apex "yet". It's sitting on carpet. Then again the AD-3201 has little feet so it's a few centimeters off ground.

I reserve 10 story window for my packard bell products.

The compaqs get the express treatment. How many flips and barrel rolls will an old 386 compaq notebook do @ 80mph out the window???

I last counted 6 and then i couldn't see it in the rear-view mirror anymore.

  12. by the way those old desktop boxes of packard bells do bounce a bout 1~2 feet when you fling them out a 10 story window

  14. Yup, my Apex AD-1100W jut burned out on me. Had a VCR on top of it. It is just a couple days over the warranty. When removing the last disk that it played there was a very strong burning smell coming out from the tray opening.

I heat a problem with these players???

Should I try to replace it with the same brand or is there a better one???

    Thanx!
