As a video editing hobbyist only, I am looking to put in a good 2nd hard drive, probably 80 to 120GB's. Although I would prefer an external hard drive like Maxtor, some of the mixed reviews on externals make me apprehensive. Should I go with an internal hard drive and if so what are you guys using. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.![]()

Don't bother with externals. If you just want the HDD to be easily removable, get something like this:

I have 4 of them; wonderful things...As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war." -
For video editing you cant beat the 8mb cache Western Digital Drives. They come in sizes from 80mb - 120mb. I think they are called the cavier special edition.

In a short sentence: Go SCSI with Seagate Cheetah drives.
You'll get the best I/O performance, without the ATA bottleneck.

I guess it would help if you specified a budget for your HDD purchase.

The Western Digital Caviar WD1200BB (2MB buffer) or WD1200JB (8MB buffer) are both very good. Hard disks are fast enough nowadays for easily capturing your digital movies so I'll opt for the BB version since it's cheaper. Another good one is the IBM 120GXP which is another 120GB hard disk and is slightly cheaper than the WD (in the UK anyway).
Hope this helps.Mantisgeek
