Can Play - Can't Convert!

HI y'all,
I hope this hasn't already been asked, I've got a two part AVI file that plays perfectly well in my DIVX Player 2.0 Alpha, but when I try to convert it, TMPGenc, Panasonic Mpeg Encoder and Virtual Dub all come up with an error message saying either the file type isn't supported or that the correct codec doesn't exist! I know the file works because we've all watched the film and the quality was OK, but how can I convert it so my family in Scotland can also share in our joy?
